Categories and Judging

This year, sake was evaluated in several categories: Junmai, Junmai Ginjo, Junmai Daiginjo, SUPER PREMIUM, and Modern Natural, adding a special Awamori category to commemorate the revival of Shuri Castle’s main hall, scheduled for autumn 2026. A panel of 43 judges, composed of sake brewers, wine sommeliers, and industry experts, meticulously tasted and scored over 1,000 entries.

Judges’ Perspectives

One of the judges, Iwao Shimizu from Shinzo Brewery, remarked on the challenges faced in sake production due to rising rice costs. While he noted an overall improvement in quality, he also highlighted technical difficulties regarding gas usage and fermentation control. His insights reflect the determination and creativity present in the sake industry today.

Koichi Hasegawa from Hasegawa Sake Brewery shared his enthusiasm for the competition's purpose: to introduce consumers to high-quality sake. He noted, "After the award ceremony on June 10, we will serve the participating sake during the award dinner. I encourage everyone to experience the beauty of Japanese sake firsthand."

Sake Competition Highlights

The competition aims to connect consumers with delicious sake, reinforcing transparency in the judging process by anonymizing brands and entries. This impartiality ensures that every participant has an equal opportunity to shine.

The evaluation criteria involve assessing the sake's adherence to quality standards, particularly focusing on its aroma and taste derived from rice. The competition rewards the top ten entries in each category with a 'GOLD' award, while those ranking in the top 10% receive a 'SILVER' recognition.
