United Community Bank Foundation Celebrates $3 Million Impact in Southeast Communities

United Community Bank Foundation's Journey to Community Empowerment

The United Community Bank Foundation proudly celebrates its five-year milestone with nearly $3 million invested in local communities throughout the Southeast. This journey reflects a commitment not only to philanthropy but to the empowerment of citizens and organizations striving for positive change.

A Foundation of Purpose

Founded to enhance the financial well-being of the communities it serves, the Foundation has awarded grants totaling $2.96 million, empowering 753 organizations through 1,146 individual grants across six states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Under the leadership of CEO Lynn Harton, the Foundation demonstrates that community service is at the heart of its operations. Harton stated, "This milestone reflects the leadership and commitment of our employees who understand the needs of their communities."

Pillars of Community Support

The Foundation’s initiatives are framed around four core pillars identified through employee input: economic empowerment, housing strategies, artistic expression, and youth development. This structure not only directs funding to critical areas but also ensures that the voices of local United community members are heard. In doing so, the organization fosters a culture of volunteerism and social responsibility.

1. Economic Empowerment: In Greenville, SC, the Foundation has supported CommunityWorks, a nonprofit lender assisting entrepreneurs through loans and financial coaching for those unable to access traditional financing.

2. Housing Strategies: United Community Bank Foundation is proud to collaborate with Habitat for Humanity, contributing $94,700 over a single year and mobilizing over 100 employee volunteers. This effort illustrates a hands-on approach to rebuilding communities.

3. Artistic Expression: The Foundation has a long-standing relationship with the Huntsville Museum of Art in Alabama, providing both financial support and board service to enhance community access to the arts.

4. Youth Development: By supporting the Boys & Girls Club of South-Central Tennessee, the Foundation ensures tailored educational programs are delivered effectively, achieving a remarkable 100 percent graduation rate among participating seniors.

Financial Education Efforts

In recognition of its commitment to financial literacy, the Foundation received the American Bankers Association Foundation's Community Commitment Award for Volunteerism. This honor underscores their active involvement during National Financial Literacy Month, where over 150 workshops were conducted, benefitting more than 13,400 residents—including students, retirees, and small-business owners.

To further amplify these efforts, the Foundation has allocated $30,000 in grants to various organizations dedicated to improving financial education.

Immediate Response to Community Needs

The Foundation’s model enables rapid, responsive action during crises. Following Hurricane Helene's devastating impact on Western North Carolina in 2024, it pledged an impressive $350,000 to aid the recovery via grants to organizations like Samaritan’s Purse and the American Red Cross. This prompt response not only illustrates the Foundation's vital role in disaster recovery but showcases the dedication of its employees who also faced personal losses during this time.

Looking to the Future

As the United Community Bank Foundation moves forward into its next five years, its core focus remains clear: to continue supporting organizations that foster community growth, financial wellness, and resilience. With a solid foundation built on tenacity, purpose, and the commitment of its employees, the Foundation looks ahead to making an even greater impact.
