The Rise of AI in K-12 Education: Bridging the Readiness Gap

Introducing the IBM K-12 AI Leaders Fellowship



In response to the findings, IBM has launched the K-12 AI Leaders Fellowship, a new professional development initiative aimed at superintendents, educational leaders, and educators. This fellowship seeks to furnish school leaders with the practical knowledge required to navigate the complexities of AI adoption.

The inaugural cohort, set to commence this fall, will focus on up to 100 educators and superintendents from the greater New York area. Participants will gain access to AI learning modules and certifications through IBM’s free education initiative, IBM SkillsBuild. Additionally, they will be provided with tailored curriculum resources and capstone projects aimed at promoting the responsible use of AI in educational settings.

Bridging Insights Between Educators and Parents



The research not only reflects the current state of AI in K-12 education but also reveals contrasting perspectives between educators and parents regarding AI literacy:

  • - Both groups agree that middle school is the optimal time for introducing AI education, with 41% of educators and parents advocating for this timeline.
  • - A noticeable divide exists in opinions about AI's role in education, demonstrated by the fact that 59% of educators believe AI literacy should be required, compared to just 40% of parents who share this view.
  • - Concerns also diverge; teachers primarily worry about student dependency on AI technology and issues of academic integrity, while administrators express concern over insufficient training and the costs associated with AI tools.
