Understanding the Financial Challenges of Cancer Treatment at Japan Cancer Forum 2026

Navigating Financial Concerns in Cancer Treatment

The intersection of cancer and financial well-being has become a pressing issue for many patients and their families. LifeNet Insurance Company, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has announced an important session titled "The Realities of Cancer and Money" at the Japan Cancer Forum 2026, organized by the certified NPO Cancer Net Japan. Set for August 8, 2026, at 2 PM, this session aims to address the financial dilemmas faced by cancer patients and their households.

The Rising Financial Anxiety in Cancer Care

Recent findings reveal significant economic implications for those diagnosed with cancer. LifeNet’s survey conducted among cancer survivors indicated an average income reduction of about 20% post-diagnosis, with nearly 40% of respondents expressing concern that public funding alone would not cover their medical expenses. Moreover, there are impending changes to the High-Cost Medical Care System that can influence patients’ household finances beginning in August 2026, highlighting the importance of awareness regarding these reforms. Alarmingly, around 80% of survey participants indicated they were unaware of the details pertaining to this upcoming reform.

The Forum's Program Overview

The session is structured in two parts:

1. Lecture by Financial Planner Naoko Kuroda: A breast cancer survivor and financial planner, Naoko Kuroda will share her personal experiences, combined with practical advice for restructuring financial plans during treatment. Topics will include insurance considerations and asset management strategies using NISA (Nippon Individual Savings Account) to secure financial stability and maintain a quality lifestyle throughout treatment.

2. Discussion Panel with LifeNet Employees: This segment will delve into the anticipated changes to the High-Cost Medical Care System. Drawing on LifeNet's 2025 survey regarding cancer and finances, the panel will discuss the implications of these changes and offer insights for patients navigating financial hurdles.
