Exciting Opportunities: 2027 Chocolate History Grants and History Tellers Award
Mars and AMERICAN HERITAGE® Chocolate have officially opened the submission process for the 2027 Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Chocolate History Grant and the History Tellers Award. Both programs invite applicants to submit their entries by October 23, 2026. This initiative marks a significant effort to deepen the understanding of chocolate's rich historical and cultural legacy.
The Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Chocolate History Grant
Initiated in 2013, the Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Chocolate History Grant is designed to illuminate the essential role chocolate has played in culture, science, and education. Over its lifetime, the Grant has allocated nearly $700,000, supporting 69 projects across 36 historic sites, museums, and educational entities in North America.
The funding aims to encourage projects that investigate or teach about chocolate's diverse history, its production methods, or the science behind cocoa. Special emphasis is placed on initiatives likely to reach a broad audience, including grants specifically for educators of K-12 students. The selection process is highly competitive, judged by a panel of experts who assess submissions based on quality and impact.

History Tellers Award
Launched in 2025 as a tribute to the United States’ 250th anniversary, the History Tellers Award recognizes dedicated professionals committed to preserving and sharing our collective history. This award celebrates interpreters, docents, guides, kitmakers, and storytellers—those ensuring that America's heritage remains engaging and accessible to future generations.
The selected winner will not only receive a grant of $15,000 but also gain invaluable promotion for their site or museum. Applications for this award will be vetted by a committee composed of museum and history specialists. To learn more and apply, candidates can visit the

A Commitment to History
Kelly Lynch, Marketing Director for Mars Snacking Premium Brands, commented on the initiative: "For over 20 years, we have funded Chocolate History Grants for exhibitions, research, and educational programs that share the fascinating story of chocolate. Thousands have engaged with the significant role chocolate plays in our nation's evolution. Adding the History Tellers Award helps support those who narrate these enriching stories."
Both grant winners will be unveiled during the Heritage Chocolate Society's annual assembly in February 2027, taking place in Washington, D.C. Founded in 2003 by Forrest E. Mars, Jr., the Society facilitates discussions about chocolate's varied history in the Americas and its broader societal effects. What began as a small gathering of 15 enthusiasts has now blossomed into a valuable annual meeting for over 150 historical and educational leaders.
