More Perfect and Tocqueville Foundation Join Forces
On April 21, 2026, More Perfect, an American alliance focused on enhancing democracy, announced a ground-breaking partnership with the Tocqueville Foundation from Normandy, France. This collaboration represents a significant initiative aimed at revitalizing transatlantic dialogue concerning the enduring relevance of democratic principles. As global uncertainty continues to rise, this alliance hopes to foster rich discussions about the future of democracy.
The Tocqueville Foundation, renowned for its dedication to preserving the intellectual legacy of Alexis de Tocqueville, has now embarked on its first partnership in the U.S. This collaboration is a remarkable opportunity for the combined knowledge and resources of civic, cultural, and intellectual institutions across the United States and Europe to engage with Tocqueville’s insights on democracy and civic engagement.
John Bridgeland, Founder and CEO of More Perfect, emphasized the importance of this partnership. He remarked, "Alexis de Tocqueville foreshadowed both the dangers and opportunities democracy provides. By uniting leaders across various sectors and continents, we aim to address contemporary challenges and create pathways towards a more resilient and inclusive democratic landscape."
From the French perspective, Jean-Guillaume de Tocqueville, the president of the Tocqueville Foundation, expressed this partnership's profound importance. He stated, "This collaboration showcases a mutual commitment to perceiving democracy not merely as a political structure but as a way of life. Tocqueville's wisdom remains a significant guide; we hope to inspire innovative thinking and substantial progresses across the Atlantic."
Unveiling New Scholarship
In conjunction with this partnership, More Perfect has commissioned an essay collection titled Alexis de Tocqueville Then and Now. This collection features contributions from distinguished scholars, historians, and civic leaders from across the nation, reflecting on themes central to Tocqueville's work. Topics include civil society, freedom of the press, political parties, and the balance between local and central governance, analyzing their relevance to today's democratic world.
Notable contributors include Danielle Allen, Donna Brazile, and Robert Putnam, along with others renowned in their fields. This collective work offers a blend of scholarly insights and personal reflections to enrich understanding and dialogue surrounding democracy.
Engaging the Public
The partnership will also orchestrate a series of Tocqueville Conversations throughout 2026. These gatherings are designed to foster dialogue among leaders from various sectors, encouraging deep reflections on the future of democratic governance. The events will take place in both the United States and France, ensuring a diverse array of perspectives.
On June 26-27, 2026, the Tocqueville Foundation and Le Figaro will host The Tocqueville Conversations in Normandy. This event aims to examine the formidable challenges that European democracies face under the thought-provoking theme, “The Future of Our Democracies – What Would Tocqueville Say?” Following this, on December 8, the first U.S. Tocqueville Conversation will take place at Mount Vernon, co-hosted by More Perfect, the Tocqueville Foundation, George Washington's estate, and Le Figaro. This event will explore the continuing relevance of Tocqueville's insights within the context of contemporary democratic issues.
Doug Bradburn, the president of George Washington's Mount Vernon, remarked, "Our space held critical conversations about republican governance, and we are honored to facilitate these engaging discussions in this historic context—especially during the 250th anniversary of self-governance in America."
Laure Mandeville, editor of Le Figaro and co-chair of the Tocqueville Conversations, noted the essence of engaging in meaningful dialogue, stating, "Robust conversations are the heart of a thriving democracy. We are excited to engage in this transatlantic exchange to invigorate public debate between France and America."
