JA SOLAR Partners with Borussia Dortmund to Launch Major Solar Project

In an exciting development for both the world of renewable energy and professional sports, JA SOLAR, a leading manufacturer of photovoltaic modules, has established a partnership with Borussia Dortmund, one of Europe’s most renowned football clubs. This collaboration aims to implement a large-scale photovoltaic system on the rooftop of the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, making it the largest solar installation on a stadium roof globally.

The deal underscores JA SOLAR's commitment to sustainability and aligns perfectly with Borussia Dortmund's ambitions to leverage innovative technologies for eco-friendly practices. By integrating this advanced solar energy system, the stadium, which already attracts the highest average attendance per match in Europe, will not only enhance its energy efficiency but also serve as a model of environmental responsibility.

The project will feature over 11,000 of JA SOLAR's premium Full-Black solar modules, which have gained popularity not only for their aesthetic appeal, perfectly matching Borussia Dortmund’s iconic black and yellow colors but also for their efficiency and performance on commercial rooftops. The new installations are expected to generate more than 4 GWh of electricity annually, significantly reducing the club’s carbon footprint by approximately 1,800 tons of CO2 emissions each year.

By utilizing clean solar energy, SIGNAL IDUNA PARK will be empowered to operate its entire lighting system for up to 1,000 matches per year sustainably. This initiative reflects JA SOLAR’s long-term involvement in the European photovoltaic market and its dedication to promoting sustainable energy solutions across various sectors.

Carsten Cramer, the Managing Director of Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA, expressed immense satisfaction regarding this collaboration, stating that it reinforces the club's commitment to sustainability while showcasing innovative technology to the world. Cramer emphasized the significant role that JA SOLAR would play in the planned renovations of the stadium’s photovoltaic capabilities.

In response, Henning Schulze, Vice President at JA SOLAR, shared his pride in contributing to such a legendary project, emphasizing the shared values of sustainability and innovation that align both organizations.

The installation work is set to commence in summer 2025, with completion anticipated by the end of that season. As anticipation rises, both JA SOLAR and Borussia Dortmund will present this venture at the Intersolar Europe event in Munich from May 7 to 9, 2025.

In recent years, JA SOLAR has grown to become a beacon of sustainability, aiming to democratize access to solar energy. With a focus on customer satisfaction, worker well-being, and increasing value for shareholders, the company collaborates with global partners to foster a beneficial industrial ecosystem—fueling progress in renewable energy and eco-friendly solutions. This partnership not only illuminates the way forward for Borussia Dortmund and JA SOLAR but also serves as an inspiration for football clubs globally, highlighting the synergy between sports and sustainable energy initiatives.
