The National University Health System (NUHS) has garnered recognition at the recently held Hospital Management Asia (HMA) Awards 2026, winning multiple accolades, including a Gold award in the 'Best in Talent Development' category. This success highlights the commitment of NUHS to foster a future-ready healthcare workforce through innovative leadership development initiatives.

The focus of NUHS's winning initiative was a scalable and sustainable leadership development system tailored to enhance the capabilities of their healthcare workforce. Designed to build a robust pipeline for future leaders, this comprehensive program has been instrumental in enhancing leadership skills across various career stages at the National University Hospital (NUH).

A Commitment to Developing Leaders

NUH's structured leadership pathway promotes leadership competencies while facilitating collaboration across departments. The HMA Gold-winning project emphasized embedding leadership development at all organizational levels. It involved signature elements such as peer learning, reflective practices, and engaging team-building segments which included interactions with senior leaders.

Notably, the leadership development framework has positively impacted workforce management, with a reported 44% growth in the leadership pipeline between 2022 and 2025. Furthermore, the proportion of individuals under 40 in the talent pool surged by 65%, signifying a strong commitment to developing younger leaders in healthcare. Employee engagement regarding training has seen an improvement of nine percentage points, while patient satisfaction rates surged from 85% to an impressive 92%.

These transformative outcomes demonstrate how NUH is not merely focusing on isolated training sessions but investing in a long-term, sustainable system for leadership growth, which consequently serves both the staff and patients effectively.

Excellence in Community Engagement

Besides the Gold award, NUHS's initiatives included five other projects recognized with Excellence Awards in various categories such as community involvement, healthcare technology, and sustainability. One of these noteworthy initiatives is the Parkinson's Café @ Alexandra Hospital. This program effectively merges medical care with social support, creating a collaborative environment suitable for patients with Parkinson's disease.

Launched in April 2025, the initiative allows small groups of patients to interact with multidisciplinary teams comprising doctors, pharmacists, and physiotherapists. This format provides a unique platform for education, support, and personalized care, showcasing the spirit of community-driven healthcare. Participants have highlighted improvements in their condition management and felt a stronger support network through the program.

Another significant project that received recognition is Closing the Gap by the National University Centre for Organ Transplantation (NUCOT). This initiative enhances organ donation awareness through structured education and community engagement to combat the pressing need for organ donors in Singapore. The educational outreach and collaboration across healthcare professionals have shown remarkable outcomes, including a notable 30.3% increase in identified potential organ donor cases.
