Experience Nostalgic Dining at Ukai Toriyama's New Lunch in a Gassho-zukuri Building

Unveiling a Unique Lunch Experience at Ukai Toriyama

Ukai Toriyama, a restaurant located in the serene surroundings of Takao, Tokyo, is set to launch a special lunch menu starting April 22, 2026. This lunch, available only on weekdays, will take place in a stunning Gassho-zukuri building that has been reconstructed from Gokayama, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its historic architectural style. This initiative aims to introduce visitors to the beauty and atmosphere of this traditional structure while enjoying exquisite dishes that showcase the essence of seasonal ingredients.

A Special Culinary Journey

The highlight of the new lunch menu is the beloved "Hoba-yaki," a dish that has been cherished since the days of Ukai Chikutei, a kaiseki restaurant formerly associated with Ukai near Takao Mountain. Hoba-yaki features fresh ingredients seasoned with flavorful miso, traditionally cooked over magnolia leaves, infusing each bite with a rich aroma. Additionally, diners can expect an array of other seasonal dishes, including hand-made soba noodles, tempura vegetables, and barley with tororo rice. This diverse menu reflects the rich culinary culture of the satoyama, providing guests with an authentic taste of nature’s bounty.

Exploring the Architectural Heritage

The Gassho-zukuri building at Ukai Toriyama is not merely a dining location, but a testament to Japan's architectural history. The structure was carefully moved from Gokayama in 1968 and has since served as a symbol of hospitality in the region. Guests will have the opportunity to explore the 2nd and 3rd floors, which are dedicated to exhibitions showcasing the region's history and culture. The tranquil and harmonious environment enhances the dining experience, inviting both first-time and returning visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of traditional Japan.
