Innovative Solar Technology Testing Begins at Sapporo City Hall for Zero Carbon Goals

A Revolutionary Step Towards Sustainable Energy in Sapporo City



Sapporo City is taking significant strides towards achieving its ambitious goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050, with a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 2016 levels. In a groundbreaking collaboration between YKK AP Inc., Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd., and Enecoat Technologies Inc., an innovative demonstration project using perovskite solar cells has commenced at the 19th-floor observation corridor of Sapporo City Hall. This initiative showcases Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), particularly focusing on the use of internal windows equipped with these cutting-edge solar cells.

YKK AP is addressing the challenges faced in cold and snowy regions like Sapporo, where heavy snowfall can significantly reduce solar energy generation and complicate installations on existing buildings. The company's vision is to create next-generation BIPV windows that not only offer insulation but also generate electricity, thereby contributing to energy production. These BIPV windows are designed to be easy to install and maintain while having a minimal impact on the building's exterior aesthetics. Furthermore, in a previous collaboration with the city, YKK AP had tested the BIPV technology during the Sapporo Snow Festival last year, successfully demonstrating energy generation even under snow-reflective conditions.

This current demonstration project is unique in that it implements the BIPV internal windows directly in an actual city facility, allowing for real-world evaluation rather than a controlled experimental setup. Located on the southern corridor of the 19th-floor observation area, this installation is accessible for public viewing and provides a spectacular view of landmarks like the Clock Tower and TV Tower, designed to raise awareness about BIPV technology and the collaboration between YKK AP and Sapporo City.

The perovskite solar cells being used in this project were developed by Enecoat Technologies, featuring advanced production techniques suitable for large-scale manufacturing, in stark contrast to the conventional small-area production methods. This innovative technology is light, thin, and flexible, allowing for high-efficiency power generation even in low-light conditions, which the company aptly markets as “Portable Power Anywhere®.” Their ultimate goal is to achieve a sustainable society through these technological advancements.

Objectives


1. Validate the power generation performance of BIPV internal windows utilizing next-generation perovskite solar cells.
2. Analyze the effectiveness of vertical solar generation and performance variations due to snow reflections.
3. Compare power generation performance against existing data from standard installations.
4. Explore implementation methods for city-owned facilities and identify challenges to devise solutions.

BIPV Internal Windows


  • - Two internal windows manufactured by YKK AP using a wooden frame, designed to be easily removable for rental spaces.
  • - Each internal window will incorporate three perovskite solar cells, with each cell measuring 450mm wide and 370mm high.

Roles of Participating Companies


YKK AP Inc.: Responsible for the design, manufacturing, and installation of BIPV windows, as well as data collection and overall project coordination.

Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd.: Will focus on the electrical wiring for BIPV windows and related instrumentation, ensuring the integrity of data collection.

Enecoat Technologies Inc.: Tasked with the production of solar cells and measurement of power generation data, analyzing factors like snow reflection on solar power output.

Through this ambitious project, Sapporo City aims to not only enhance its contributions to sustainable energy but also establish a model for other municipalities across the country to follow in their pursuit of environmental responsibility and innovation.
