Patriots QB Drake Maye and Granite Telecommunications Raise Funds for Boston Children's Hospital
In a heartwarming display of community spirit and generosity, New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, along with his wife Ann Michael and over 800 participants, joined forces to raise an astounding $4.155 million for Boston Children's Hospital during Granite Telecommunications' 13th annual "Saving by Shaving" event. This incredible fundraising initiative has amassed a total of $62.7 million since its inception in 2014, showcasing the commitment of Granite Telecommunications to support crucial pediatric healthcare.
The event took place in Quincy, Massachusetts, and brought together a diverse group of community leaders, celebrities, and athletes, demonstrating the collective impact that individuals can make when they rally around a noble cause. Among the guests were Patriots legend Joe Andruzzi, Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch, and Dr. Kevin Churchwell, the CEO of Boston Children's Hospital.
A Tradition Rooted in Compassion
Granite Telecommunications, recognized for its role as a leading communications provider in North America, has made the "Saving by Shaving" initiative a cornerstone of its corporate social responsibility efforts. The event encourages participants to shave their heads or donate their hair to support those affected by cancer and other illnesses, all while contributing to pediatric research and treatments at Boston Children's Hospital. For each individual who participated, Granite donated $2,500, which was then matched by the Hale family, resulting in a total contribution of $5,000 for every participant.
This year's event was particularly special for the Maye family, as they also announced the launch of the MayeDay Family Foundation, dedicated to funding a Child Life therapist in the oncology unit at Boston Children's Hospital for the next three years. The foundation aims to enhance the support and resources available to pediatric cancer patients and their families.
Furthermore, the Maye family is set to host the inaugural "MayeDay Family Foundation Celebrity Softball Classic" at Polar Park in Worcester on May 31, with proceeds also benefiting the hospital.
Uniting for a Common Cause
Drake Maye shared his enthusiasm for the event, remarking on how it epitomizes the power of collective action. He stated, "When an entire company comes together at an event like this, it becomes something bigger than business — it becomes purpose in action." This sentiment echoes the ethos of Granite Telecommunications CEO Rob Hale, who expressed immense pride in seeing colleagues, friends, and community members unite for the sake of supporting Boston Children's Hospital.
The event further highlighted the importance of giving back, as more than 12,000 individuals have participated over the past thirteen years, shaving their heads or donating hair to raise funds for pediatric research and treatments. In addition to the fundraising efforts, Hair We Share, an organization dedicated to creating custom wigs for those suffering from medical hair loss, received all donated hair.
Community Support and Partnerships
The event would not have been possible without the generous support from Granite's business partners and local enterprises. Dunkin’ generously provided refreshments to the participants, while several professional barbers and stylists volunteered their time and expertise to help with hair shaving, contributing to the festive and supportive atmosphere.
Granite Telecommunications, founded in 2002, continues to lead the way in telecommunications, supporting over two-thirds of Fortune 100 companies across the United States and Canada. Their commitment to philanthropy, particularly through the "Saving by Shaving" program, highlights their belief in the importance of community involvement and making a positive impact on the lives of others.
As Boston Children's Hospital continues its mission to provide world-class pediatric care, initiatives like "Saving by Shaving" serve as a vital reminder of how collective efforts can create meaningful change in the lives of children and families facing daunting challenges.
With every dollar raised, these initiatives foster hope and further the hospital's capabilities in delivering exceptional healthcare to those who need it the most. This year’s event not only raised significant funds but also reinforced the message that together, communities can achieve remarkable feats through compassion and solidarity.
