Daniel Blumberg's Solo Exhibition "Palm Of The Hand Drawings" to Showcase Unique Art in Tokyo

Exploring the Artistic Depths of Daniel Blumberg

From June 26 to July 5, 2026, at tata bookshop / gallery in Koenji, Tokyo, art enthusiasts are in for a treat with Daniel Blumberg's debut solo exhibition in Japan, titled "Palm Of The Hand Drawings." Known for his cross-disciplinary approach to art, which encompasses drawing, songwriting, improvisation, and sound, Blumberg's work evokes profound emotional resonances and personal memories.

Born in London in 1990, Daniel Blumberg has built a reputation for his intricate silverpoint drawings, a technique that has historical significance, dating back to the time before the widespread use of pencils. Silverpoint drawing allows for a delicate interaction between the artist and the medium; the silver lines respond to environmental factors like air and humidity. Over time, these lines oxidize and transform, making each artwork a dynamic record of time itself rather than a final product. This unique technique emphasizes the ongoing creative process, allowing the viewer to contemplate the passage of time and memory.

At this upcoming exhibition, Blumberg will present a collection of drawings housed within a small silver photo case that he brought from London. Since the 19th century, silver photo cases have served as intimate vessels for keeping beloved portraits close to one’s heart. By placing his drawings inside these cases, Blumberg transforms them into personal vessels for memories while simultaneously expanding their role into a more open imaginative space.

The exhibition title, inspired by Yasunari Kawabata's “Palm Of The Hand Stories,” reflects his thematic preoccupations with small forms encapsulating vast universes of time, space, and imagination. Additionally, the works of Robert Walser, particularly his “Microscripts,” serve as important reference points. Both Kawabata’s and Walser’s works resonate with Blumberg’s approach, creating expansive narratives within compact formats.

Blumberg's exhibitions have previously graced renowned international venues such as Balice Hertling in Paris, Triennale Milano, Kunsthal Rotterdam, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, and the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, showcasing his growing prominence in the contemporary art scene. Alongside his visual arts practice, he has also released several solo albums through Mute Records and crafted music for films like “Sotto le Nuvole” and “The Brutalist,” the latter earning him the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2025.

In addition to the exhibition, on June 29, 2026, Blumberg will perform alongside Keiji Haino at the Sakigake Hall in Akasaka, Tokyo, as part of a collaboration with Ellen Arkbro and the Reigakusha Gagaku Ensemble. This performance promises to be an extraordinary fusion of talent, intersecting multiple disciplines in a celebratory expression of sound.
