Reducing Food Waste: Too Good To Go Enhances Partnership with JR East Cross Station

Tackling Food Waste with Too Good To Go and JR East

In an ambitious move to combat food waste, Too Good To Go Japan, a subsidiary of the globally recognized food waste reduction app, Too Good To Go, based in Denmark, has announced an enhanced partnership with JR East Cross Station. This partnership aims to roll out services in urban areas starting August 3, 2026, specifically at three locations of the "Omusubi-dokoro Honnori-ya" stores located in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Background of the Collaboration

Since the official launch of Too Good To Go in Japan in January 2026, the app has been introduced at the "NewDays" convenience stores in East Japan Railway’s stations. This has led to significant success, demonstrated by a clear reduction in food waste and an increase in new and repeat customers at participating locations. As of now, the service has expanded to 160 stores in the greater Tokyo area, with plans for further growth.

By integrating Too Good To Go into the operations of its brands, including "Fruits Garden Lieber," JR East Cross Station highlights a broad commitment to sustainability and consumer satisfaction.

Addressing Food Waste in Fast Food

In the food service industry, employing a strategy of offering a wide selection until closing time often results in unsold items that are subsequently discarded. Within the Omusubi-dokoro Honnori-ya franchise, over 10,000 rice balls are wasted monthly due to this leftover inventory. The introduction of Too Good To Go will allow these unsold items to be packaged into "Surprise Bags" to be sold at reduced prices, thereby reducing food waste while simultaneously optimizing operations for the business.

This innovative approach ensures that high-quality food reaches consumers rather than being thrown away, aligning closely with both companies’ sustainability goals.

Specifics of the Service Launch

Starting from August 3, 2026, the service will be available at the following three stores:
  • - Omusubi-dokoro Honnori-ya Shimbashi
  • - Omusubi-dokoro Honnori-ya Fujisawa
  • - Omusubi-dokoro Honnori-ya Kawaguchi

Customers can expect a variety of offerings, including a mix of rice balls and side dishes, all available at a bargain price.
