Sumitomo Heavy Industries Group Leverages Offsite PPA for Renewable Energy
The innovative collaboration between Enaris and Sumitomo Heavy Industries has paved the way for maximizing renewable energy utilization. Enaris, a retail electricity provider and aggregator headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has partnered with Sumitomo Heavy Industries and Sumitomo Heavy Industries Modern to initiate an Offsite Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). This agreement, effective April 24, 2026, allows for the supply of surplus electricity generated from solar power facilities established in Chiba Prefecture.
The Genesis of the Partnership
Enaris has been supplying surplus renewable energy generated from solar installations at Sumitomo Heavy Industries Modern's factories in Futtsu since last November. However, the quantity of surplus electricity remained significant, necessitating further action. Consequently, Enaris branched out its supply to Sumitomo Heavy Industries’ manufacturing plant in Tanashi,West Tokyo.
An Offsite PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) is a contractual arrangement where electricity consumers (demanders) purchase renewable energy and its environmental value from producers over a long term. In this case, the utility facilities are located outside the consumers' premises, making renewable energy accessible even when companies cannot install power generation facilities on-site.
The Importance of Surplus Energy
As part of the government's initiative to promote renewable energy, there has been an increasing trend for companies to adopt solar power systems. Yet, instances of surplus electricity going to waste due to inadequate consumption are not uncommon. This wastage does not only undermine the potential of renewable energy to contribute to decarbonization; it also delays the recovery of investments made by businesses in energy systems. The utilization of excess energy through an Offsite PPA framework presents a viable solution, provided that weather patterns and demand forecasts are accurately predicted. The technical challenges multiply when supplying power across multiple locations.
Commitment to Sustainability
The Sumitomo Heavy Industries Group is deeply committed to reducing its environmental impact through both operational practices and enhancing the environmental performance of its products. They aim for carbon neutrality by 2050 with a targeted 50% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO2 emissions by 2030, compared to 2019 levels.
Harnessing Enaris's expertise, which stems from its core business in demand-supply management, the collaboration is set to enhance efficiency in energy utilization across various sites. Enaris employs predictive technologies to accurately estimate demand, generation, and surplus power, thus facilitating efficient allocation of energy resources. This innovative approach permits the Sumitomo Heavy Industries Group to employ surplus energy more effectively and play a pivotal role in contributing to Japan's carbon neutrality goals.
