In an exciting development for sustainable architecture, Spice Factory Inc., a leader in digital transformation support, announced the establishment of its new Kansai office within "THE VILLAGE OSAKA," set to open on March 1, 2026. This groundbreaking office is set to utilize construction materials from the Osaka-Kansai World Expo, exemplifying a commitment to waste reduction and resource circulation.

The new office's concept, titled "Out of Arts," strives to liberate creativity by creating a space where diverse talents can come together and co-create. By reusing building materials from the Expo, the office will marry sustainability and design, crafting a unique atmosphere that fosters innovation. Fara Taraie, a sustainable architecture designer and head of NewNorm Design, is overseeing the design and construction of the office, ensuring that every aspect aligns with environmental ethics.

Tackling Construction Waste

Japan grapples with the substantial issue of construction waste, with approximately 74.4 million tons generated in 2018, and 26.22 million tons being recycled in 2022, falling just short of the 98% government target. To combat this issue, Spice Factory has embedded sustainability into its management practices, driven by the purpose of "making the world a better place one pixel at a time." Recent efforts include reusing 77% of office furnishings during their Tokyo headquarters relocation and achieving a 94.3% recycling rate of construction waste.

Sustainable Platforms Empowering Change

Utilizing a sustainable platform that offers reusable construction materials and ethical resources, this initiative is set to make significant strides in environmental responsibility. By using "Matinno," a platform managed by NewNorm Design dedicated to sustainable materials, and the "Expo Circular Market Myaku City!" aimed at promoting resource circulation post-Expo, the office sets an example for future projects.

The Design Philosophy of Fara Taraie

Fara Taraie brings her global experience and passion for sustainable design to this project. Having lived in various countries, she graduated with a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Tokyo and has been engaged in myriad sustainable projects across Japan and abroad. Her design philosophy emphasizes balancing productivity with environmental awareness, mirroring the office's mission to demonstrate that waste can yield value through creativity.

She envisions a workspace that integrates various aspects of sustainability while offering hands-on opportunities for employees to engage in the design process through DIY workshops, effectively deepening their connection to the space.
