SailGP and DP World Launch Groundbreaking Women’s Performance Camp
In a significant move towards promoting gender equality in sports, SailGP, in partnership with DP World, hosted an innovative Women's Performance Camp following the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix on November 25 and 26, 2024. This camp is recognized as the largest development program for female athletes within the league, equating to two full seasons of on-water training condensed into just two days.
The event took place at Mina Rashid in Dubai, where 18 talented female sailors gathered for an intensive program. The training included position-specific coaching, tailored training sessions, and skill development activities alongside male athletes, embodying SailGP's commitment to inclusivity and empowerment in competitive sailing.
Fiona Morgan, Chief Purpose Officer of SailGP, expressed her enthusiasm about the event, stating, "The SailGP Women's Performance Camp has launched the 2025 season with a transformative ambition for sailing sports. This initiative underscores our dedication to gender equality through impactful on-water training programs. The progress made in just two days was phenomenal, demonstrating how breaking barriers and redefining possibilities leads to greater self-determination. The future of sailing sports is a future of unity, where men and women stand together at the forefront."
Abdulla bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director for DP World in the GCC, reinforced the importance of the camp, saying, "We are proud to support this groundbreaking initiative that empowers SailGP female athletes and promotes inclusion. This camp marks a crucial step toward enhancing diversity and creating opportunities for women in competitive sailing."
New Zealand SailGP team member Liv Mackay, fresh off a victory in the 2025 season opener, emphasized the significance of the camp: "The Women’s Performance Camp is a real turning point. Having 18 women on the water gaining so much experience is a big step forward."
The camp follows DP World's announcement as the new global logistics partner for SailGP, underscoring the two organizations' commitment to sustainable and innovative practices in sailing. Under this partnership, DP World will manage the logistics of SailGP’s race equipment throughout the global racing calendar sustainably and efficiently. This collaboration, spanning three seasons, was initiated during the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix and highlights both entities' dedication to innovation and progress in the sport.
The SailGP season will continue with the upcoming ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Auckland, scheduled for January 18 and 19, 2025. The enthusiasm generated from this camp promises a bright future for women in sailing and emphasizes the necessity of such initiatives for progress in the sport without bias.
