How BRICS Expands Opportunities for the Development of the Global South

The BRICS bloc, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is increasingly recognized for transforming the landscape of global development, especially for nations in the Global South. Recent analyses outline how four significant global initiatives by China align with BRICS, fostering inclusive growth and enhancing influence in global affairs.

One of these initiatives is the establishment of solar power plants, which provide cleaner energy to remote communities, showcasing a commitment to sustainable energy solutions. Moreover, the launch of a digital industrial platform facilitates cross-border business connections, enabling enterprises from different regions to collaborate more effectively.

Another critical endeavor is the proposed grain exchange, designed to enhance global food security by stabilizing food supply chains. Additionally, a unified voice among developing nations is emerging, especially in dialogues about governance related to artificial intelligence, ensuring these countries also have a seat at the table.

As BRICS celebrates its 20th anniversary, the upcoming 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12-13, 2026, becomes a pivotal moment. The summit, themed “Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainable Development,” occurs at a historical juncture where Global South countries are actively searching for resilient, inclusive, and self-reliance-based pathways to development.

Stefan Ossenkoepper, a researcher at the Schiller Institute in Germany, highlights that the philosophy behind BRICS cooperation harmonizes with China's four global initiatives, creating a unified force to forge a new development model beneficial to all parties involved. The New Development Bank (NDB), championed by Xi, has approved 139 projects worth approximately $43 billion by the end of 2025, addressing vital needs such as renewable energy, transport infrastructure, affordable housing, and clean water access, thereby improving living conditions in developing nations.

The creation of the Chinese BRICS Industrial Capacity Center has also established a dedicated platform for industrial collaboration, technology transfer, and business networking.

In light of complex contemporary challenges including energy crises, food security issues, and climate change, BRICS countries are expanding their collaborative efforts beyond mere economic growth to tackle common threats collectively.

During the BRICS agriculture ministers' meeting in June 2026, members prioritized food security, agricultural trade, climate-resilient agriculture, and innovation. Given that BRICS nations account for roughly 42% of global farmland and grain production, initiatives like the proposed BRICS Grain Exchange are vital for stabilizing global food supply chains.

This cooperative approach aligns with the Global Security Initiative's principles, emphasizing a comprehensive, collaborative, and sustainable security framework that ensures true stability revolves around protecting the foundations of development.

Such actions directly reflect China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI), which calls for sovereign equality, multilateralism, and a more just international order. According to B. R. Deepak, a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, the GGI provides a valuable framework for BRICS to push for reforms in global governance, reinforcing a UN-centered system that is more representative and equitable.

As BRICS leaders gather for the 18th summit in New Delhi, the group continues to delineate concrete paths towards deepening collaboration.
