LG and UNESCO Launch the AI Ethics MOOC Project

On July 20, 2026, at the Korean National Commission for UNESCO in Myeong-dong, Seoul, LG AI Research and UNESCO introduced the groundbreaking AI Ethics MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) Project. This initiative aims to provide free education globally, with an emphasis on fostering ethical practices in AI.

The launch event featured notable figures including Dr. Khaled El-Enany, UNESCO's Director-General, Mr. Kyung-hoon Bae, Deputy Prime Minister, and Woohyung Lim from LG AI Research. Dr. El-Enany highlighted that "principles alone do not build ethical AI, people do." He reinforced UNESCO's commitment to translating ethical standards into practical learning experiences that can be integrated into the AI lifecycle.

Mr. Bae echoed these sentiments, pointing out the dual nature of AI as both an opportunity and a challenge. He stressed the importance of establishing shared international principles to foster a safe AI ecosystem.

Capacity Building Through Global Collaboration

The AI Ethics MOOC Project marks a significant milestone, two years following a foundational agreement made during the AI Seoul Summit in May 2024. The primary goal of the project is to enhance the capabilities of both public and private sectors concerning ethical AI development and deployment. By identifying best practices, the initiative aims to cultivate a comprehensive educational framework beneficial to AI professionals globally.

Notably, this is the first instance where a private AI research institution in South Korea has partnered with a specialized UN agency to create an educational curriculum focused on AI ethics. The course is built around the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, a global standard adopted by 193 UNESCO member states in 2021. This course is developed to empower developers and policymakers to apply ethical principles in their everyday work efficiently.

To ensure broad accessibility, LG AI Research has partnered with Coursera, a leading online learning platform founded by AI scholar Andrew Ng. The course comprises 10 modules taught by experts from prestigious institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University and Stanford University, ensuring a high standard of education.

Moreover, input and support for the project come from an international advisory group comprising representatives from 15 prominent organizations, including Harvard University and the University of Toronto. This level of involvement underscores the project’s credibility and potential for global influence.

Ethics by Design: Industry Innovation

The launch was accompanied by a conference themed "Ethics by Design Industry Innovation," where significant contributors discussed the impact and implementation of UNESCO's AI Ethics Recommendations. Speakers included Dr. Georgina Curto-Rex from the United Nations University and professors from leading global universities. These discussions emphasized not just theoretical frameworks but actionable strategies for integrating ethics into AI technology development.

Youchul Kim, Head of Strategy at LG AI Research, emphasized the importance of education in cultivating trust within the AI ecosystem. He stated that fostering collaboration among global developers under unified ethical standards is essential for the trustworthy deployment of AI technologies.

Marni Baker Stein, Chief Content Officer at Coursera, expressed enthusiasm about bringing UNESCO's ethical guidelines into the Coursera platform. She noted that the course would empower learners worldwide to make informed decisions on AI governance and design, thus democratizing education around such a critical global issue.

Future Directions: Domestic AI Ethics Training

Looking ahead, the collaboration between LG AI Research and UNESCO will not only stay on an international scale but will also incorporate domestic training programs aimed at nurturing practical ethics capabilities in AI. Starting with a pilot ethics training program in South Korea, plans are in place to expand this into a broader curriculum across various regional universities.

Hyunik Hong, Secretary-General of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, shared insights into the vital role that practical guidance plays in the tech development process, reiterating the hope that the MOOC will equip practitioners to make responsible choices.

As South Korea strives to make AI benefits universally accessible, LG AI Research is not only participating in global dialogues regarding AI ethics but is also positioning itself as a frontrunner in global AI ethics education. This shift from being a consumer to a contributor in global standards indicates South Korea’s growing leadership in the field.

Woohyung Lim, Co-head of LG AI Research, concluded by advocating for the necessity of transitioning from consensus to practical application in AI ethics, underscoring the essential role this MOOC Project plays in shaping a responsible and transparent AI ecosystem.
