To better understand this fascination, Cross Marketing, a Tokyo-based firm, recently conducted a survey that analyzed the interests and motivations of individuals aged 20 to 69 towards these prehistoric marvels. With summer leading to a series of dinosaur exhibitions across Japan, the study sheds light on what excites the curiosity of the public about these ancient creatures and their mysteries.

According to the survey, approximately 30% of respondents expressed a keen interest in both dinosaurs and fossils, with a notable inclination among males in particular. The results illustrated that the primary reasons for this fascination include the abundance of unresolved mysteries surrounding these creatures and the romantic allure associated with their existence and exploration, both of which were noted by 41.3% of participants. Awareness of Earth’s historical narrative and the enjoyment in learning about evolutionary history and ecology closely followed, garnering around 38% acknowledgment, with almost 60% of those in their 60s feeling a strong connection to the Earth's historical context.

When it comes to activities individuals wish to pursue related to dinosaurs and fossils, visiting science museums or special exhibitions topped the list. The desire to dig for fossils in natural settings and to observe living fossils also ranked highly among popular choices. Interestingly, those aged 50 to 60 showed a greater interest in engaging in hands-on experiences related to fossils, while younger respondents expressed a notable preference for collectibles such as guidebooks and capsule toys.

The survey also revealed various triggers that sparked initial interests in dinosaurs and fossils. Notably, visiting science museums or dinosaur exhibitions, watching educational television programs, reading informative texts and comics, and viewing movies all contributed to sparking curiosity, with each of these avenues cited by around 20% of respondents.

Fascinatingly, the survey encouraged respondents to share their favorite dinosaurs, often based on perceived aesthetics. The Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops, and Pteranodon emerged as popular choices for their coolness or cuteness. As for fossils, the ammonite attracted attention due to its beautiful shape.
