Dr. Dan Garvey's Return Marks a New Era for Prescott College Leadership

Prescott College Welcomes Back Dr. Dan Garvey as President

The Prescott College Board of Trustees recently announced the remarkable return of Dr. Dan Garvey to the role of president, making him the 19th individual to serve in this prestigious position. Dr. Garvey, who previously held the office from 2000 to 2010, is set to assume his duties once again on January 1, 2026, following the retirement of Dr. Barbara Morris.

Dr. Garvey's extensive background in education and leadership spans over five decades, showcasing his commitment and influence in the field of higher education. He earned a Ph.D. in Education, focusing on Social and Multicultural Foundations at the University of Colorado Boulder. It was during this time that he began to shape his educational philosophy, emphasizing cross-cultural experiences and moral development as pivotal components of education. His academic journey also includes an M.A. in Social Change from the Cambridge–Goddard Graduate School and a B.A. in Sociology from Worcester State University.

Beyond his educational credentials, Dr. Garvey holds a rich tapestry of experiences. He served not only as the president of Prescott College but also as Associate Dean and Assistant Professor at the University of New Hampshire, and as the Executive Director of the Association for Experiential Education. His leadership in international education is notable, having held multiple roles as Executive Dean for Semester at Sea, facilitating enriching academic voyages across numerous countries.

In a statement regarding his return, Dr. Garvey expressed both excitement and gratitude, stating, "I am honored and excited to return to Prescott College. The Prescott College community has achieved so much in its brief 60 years. I'd like to recognize our accomplishments but envision that the best is still ahead of us. There may never have been a time when the values and contributions of our College have been more needed in American education."

The Board of Trustees cited Dr. Garvey's ongoing relationship with the college as a significant factor in his reappointment. Kathleen Murphy, Chair of the Board, remarked on his longstanding leadership, saying, "On January 1, 2026, Dr. Dan Garvey will return to Prescott College, a campus which is home to a building that has long borne his name - the Dan and Barbara Garvey Welcome Center. Dan is a strong leader and truly espouses the values of Prescott College. We are thrilled to welcome him home."

Founded in 1966, Prescott College has gained a reputation for its innovative approach to education, focusing on experiential and field-based learning. The college has continuously evolved its methods to meet the demands of contemporary issues facing society, promoting collaborative learning and multidisciplinary studies. Students graduating from Prescott College are often educators, activists, and innovators, dedicated to making a positive impact in their communities.

As Prescott College prepares for this new chapter under Dr. Garvey's leadership, the institution looks forward to further developing its commitment to transformative educational practices that align with its foundation in social justice and environmental sustainability.
