Bio-X Announces Strategic Partnership to Enter Pet Market with 100% PLA Products

Bio-X Expands to the Pet Market with 100% Plant-Based Products

On August 30, 2025, Bio-X Co., Ltd., headquartered in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture, announced its strategic capital partnership aimed at venturing into the burgeoning pet market, which is valued at an impressive ¥1.8 trillion. This initiative follows its previous collaborations within the medical and island sectors, focusing on the development of 100% plant-derived PLA products. Bio-X has been at the forefront of innovation in this field, pouring efforts into the development of poly-lactic acid (PLA) technology since 2020.

Journey Towards Innovation in PLA Technology

Bio-X has successfully developed a technology to enhance the heat resistance of PLA, derived entirely from corn, to endure temperatures up to 150°C. In early 2022, the company became the world's first to showcase prototype products utilizing this groundbreaking technology. Bio-X is determined to license its intellectual property to replace petroleum-derived products with environmentally friendly PLA options across various spheres.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Bio-X began collaborating in October 2022 with Hino Seiki Co., Ltd to manufacture hard and soft cups using PLA. These products are expected to replace PET bottles at events like the 79th National Sports Festival and the 24th National Disabled Sports Festival in Shiga Prefecture in September and October 2025. These achievements are currently under patent application.

Strategic Partnerships and Future Prospects

In pursuit of expanding its product offerings, Bio-X established a capital alliance with FRF Japan, a medical device manufacturer, on August 18, 2025, targeting the development of 100% plant-derived medical products. Additionally, on August 25, 2025, the company partnered with TARGET JAMM, leveraging domestic sugarcane by-products as a resource for creating miscellaneous goods and utensils.

The latest partnership with Anipital Co., Ltd., based in Kobe City, was finalized to solidify Bio-X's entry into the pet market. Bio-X acquired 34.4% of Anipital’s stock, marking a significant step towards crafting safe and reliable 100% plant-based PLA products for pets. With this venture, Bio-X's President Koichi Yoshida will also join Anipital's board of directors.

Bio-X aims to develop and supply various products including medical instruments for veterinary clinics, pet dishes, toys, and other daily essentials. All these products will be uniquely branded by Anipital. The focus will be on ensuring that even if pets mistakenly ingest these items or if they’re retained in their system, they remain harmless to their health.
