NOK Innovates Biomass Material for Eco-Friendly Seals with 48% Biomass Content

NOK Develops New Biomass Material for Seals

NOK Corporation, headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, has announced the development of a new biomass material for polyurethane seals that achieves an impressive biomass content of 48%. This innovative polyurethane elastomer material reduces CO2 emissions during manufacturing by approximately 48% compared to traditional petroleum-derived materials, while also maintaining the unique elasticity and toughness characteristics of their popular "Iron Rubber" brand.

The newly engineered seals made from this material are particularly designed for hydraulic equipment using bio-based hydraulic fluids. They effectively prevent oil leaks, thereby contributing to a decrease in environmental impact in sensitive areas such as forests and waterways.

Background of Development

Amid growing concerns about decarbonization and environmental preservation, there is an increasing demand for sustainable manufacturing practices in materials science. The newly developed biomass material addresses this need by simultaneously achieving carbon neutrality through high biomass content and supporting the circular economy with its compatibility with biodegradable hydraulic oils.

NOK faced several technical challenges while developing this material. Higher ratios of plant-derived polymers can affect the stability of molding and curing processes, hindering the desired properties found in the "Iron Rubber". Furthermore, biodegradable hydraulic fluids are known for their tendency to cause excessive swelling in seals, leading to wear. Therefore, ensuring durability was crucial for the application of this new seal material.

Leveraging its robust technical foundation that integrates material development with evaluation and analysis, NOK has successfully solved these issues, resulting in a bio-based material that upholds the renowned characteristics of "Iron Rubber" while ensuring durability against biodegradable hydraulic oils.

Key Features of the Newly Developed Biomass Material

  • - Balance of Environmental and Basic Performance: This material not only achieves high biomass content but also retains the inherent durability and sealing capabilities of polyurethane.
  • - Implementation in Eco-Friendly Cylinders: It can be employed in construction machinery operating in environmentally sensitive areas, thus contributing to a reduction in environmental impact when combined with biodegradable hydraulic fluids.
  • - JORA Certification: This material has obtained the Bio-Mass Mark certification from the Japan Organic Resources Association (JORA), certifying its sustainable properties (Certification Number: 250132).

Other Biomass Products by NOK

  • - Post-Corn Biomass Type (Certification Number: 220348, Biomass Content: 39%): Incorporates plant-based materials into post-corn products.
