Rio Tinto and AMG Collaborate on a Low-Carbon Aluminium Venture in India

Rio Tinto and AMG Metals & Materials Aim for Green Innovation in Aluminium Production



In a significant development for sustainable manufacturing, Rio Tinto has partnered with AMG Metals & Materials (AMG M&M) to assess the feasibility of a low-carbon aluminium project in India. The two companies recently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to evaluate how they can create an integrated aluminium production plant that aligns with the growing demand for eco-friendly materials.

Project Overview


The collaboration will focus on the development of a primary aluminium smelter with a capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) and the production of 2 Mtpa of alumina. The facility will be powered by renewable energy sources, including solar and wind energy, complemented by pumped hydro storage systems. This innovative energy mix is designed to ensure a low-carbon footprint throughout the aluminium production process.

As part of the initial assessment, the teams will investigate the possibility of establishing a 500,000 tonnes per annum primary aluminium smelter in India. Rio Tinto’s Aluminium Chief Executive, Jérôme Pécresse, expressed his optimism, stating, “This study is an important step in our ambition to grow our global, low-carbon aluminium footprint while exploring new project delivery approaches and opportunities in emerging markets.”

Pécresse noted that the partnership with AMG Metals & Materials positions Rio Tinto well to incorporate renewable energy into its production lines, thus supporting a more responsible aluminium production paradigm.
