Cheer Re-Man’s: The Spectacular Performance by Salarymen Hits Major Milestone
In an electrifying twist on traditional cheerleading, Cheer Re-Man's, a performance team composed of salarymen, is making waves across Japan. With over 600,000 followers on social media and appearances on TV programs, commercials, and large-scale corporate events, they have carved out a unique niche that blurs the lines between work and passion. Recently, they announced their largest solo performance yet, which will take place at Tokyo International Forum and Osaka's Orix Theater.
In June, we had the unique opportunity to visit their rehearsal space and speak with team members about their intense dedication and excitement for the upcoming show.
The Motivation Behind the Moves
During our interview, team members Akai, Mochizuki, Kanbara, Ando, and Maruyama expressed their enthusiasm for cheerleading and what drives them to pursue this passion alongside their day jobs. "Of course, I love cheerleading! But what I enjoy most is achieving something great with my teammates. At this point, it might not even matter what the activity is; it’s the camaraderie that keeps me going," expressed Mochizuki.
Kanbara added that the thrill of uncertainty is addictive. "As a salaryman, I can somewhat predict my future, but with Cheer Re-Man's, the possibilities are endless! Just a few months after establishing our team, we appeared on TBS's morning variety show 'Lavit!' and it's hard to fathom that we will be performing on shows like 'Britain's Got Talent.' We fully embrace this exciting lifestyle and dedicate every spare moment to it!"
Maruyama, who currently works in Fukuoka and takes flights to Tokyo for rehearsals, views the commitment as a once-in-a-lifetime challenge. "Finding a group of people with such a shared vision and energy is rare." Overcoming the logistical challenges doesn't feel burdensome to him because of the positive environment they've created together.
Ando highlighted the unique energy of male cheerleading. He stated, "There’s something incredibly captivating about male cheerleaders wearing suits while performing acrobatic moves. There’s an unparalleled intensity to it." The thrill they experience when executing techniques is akin to hitting a perfect basketball free throw; it’s all about that exhilarating moment of achievement.
Redefining Perspectives
Mochizuki talked about breaking stereotypes surrounding cheerleading, which often tends to be associated only with female performers. "When people witness our performances, their reactions shift dramatically—they’re genuinely moved and impressed. We’re not just performing; we’re challenging perspectives!" Kanbara shared a poignant moment from a previous performance, where an elderly audience member expressed gratitude with tears in his eyes. Such responses validate the team’s mission to inspire others.
Team Dynamics
While flying during performances garners attention, members acknowledged the importance of solid foundations in cheerleading. "It’s definitely a team sport where every role is crucial," remarked Kanbara. They also discussed their training regimen and how members adapt to various roles on the team based on individual strengths and preferences.
With the team constantly pushing boundaries, they have taken their skills to new heights through additional training in fitness and dance. Recent fitness trends amongst the members have seen a few taking part in national body-building contests, proving their commitment to both health and performance.
The Power of Performance
Their unique dynamic is emphasized during performances, where the energy radiates through powerful vocal encouragement, driving both the audience and teammates alike. This collective spirit to uplift one another is an exhilarating experience, particularly during challenging rehearsals. "Eye contact is critical—not just a formality. It’s about building trust," emphasized Kanbara, noting the inherent risks involved in their routines.
As they gear up for their shows, the costume choice is equally impressive. Their signature suits, notably the stretchy Uniqlo 'Kando Jacket', enable them to perform high-energy moves without restrictions.
Heartfelt Reflections
As the interview wrapped up, members reflected on their journey and the importance of their shared experiences. They’ve transformed from ordinary salarymen into a celebrated performance group—an accomplishment made possible by the passion of each team member.
Mochizuki ended with an inspiring message for the audience: "You may see extravagant stunts in performances around the world, but I can confidently say that our energy is unmatched. If anyone feels stuck or disheartened, we invite them to come to our show and experience our passion. We hope to reignite your spirit!"
