IRS Free File Now Available for the 2025 Tax Season
Starting today, taxpayers can access the
IRS Free File program for the 2025 tax season, offering complimentary federal tax preparation and e-filing software through the website
www.IRS.gov/FreeFile. This initiative, powered by the
Free File Alliance, a collaboration of eight prominent tax software companies, is available to all Americans whose 2024 adjusted gross income (AGI) is $84,000 or less.
The Free File program simplifies the tax preparation process for nearly 100 million people—over 70% of taxpayers—by providing free access to innovative and secure tax software. The participating companies include well-known names like
TaxAct,
TaxSlayer, and
FileYourTaxes.com, among others. Many of these platforms also allow users to e-file state income tax returns at no additional cost.
Tim Hugo, Executive Director of the Free File Alliance, emphasizes that this program is not just for those with basic tax situations. Even taxpayers with complex returns, including those with small businesses or various income sources, can avail of these services, provided their AGI remains below the $84,000 threshold.
How to Access Free File
Taxpayers can conveniently access these services using their smartphones or tablets. Two main methods include using the
IRS2Go app or simply browsing to
www.IRS.gov/FreeFile on their device. The app, available for both Android and iOS, offers a direct link to the Free File Software Lookup Tool, ensuring users find the best match for their tax needs.
Commitment to Security
The Free File Alliance is dedicated to safeguarding taxpayers' personal information as part of their participation in the
IRS Security Summit Initiative. Alongside the IRS and other tax agencies, the alliance actively promotes strong identity theft protections to enhance the security of tax filings. More information on these measures can be explored at the IRS' dedicated webpage on tax security.
In the program’s 23-year history, Free File has successfully filed over 75 million returns, amounting to an estimated $3 billion in free tax software. In 2025, the Free File program aims to increase participation, as its website remains the primary resource for taxpayers seeking easy-to-use and free preparation options.
From January 27, 2025, additional services called
Free File Fillable Forms will be available to all income levels. This option allows taxpayers who are well-versed in tax regulations to complete and electronically submit their returns independently and without any preparatory assistance.
Why Choose Free File?
The goal of the Free File program is to introduce millions of Americans, especially those who may struggle to afford commercial tax preparation software, to the efficiency and convenience of e-filing. In a recent survey, an impressive 98% of users expressed their intention to use the Free File program again, showcasing its effectiveness and user satisfaction.
For anyone looking to take advantage of this invaluable service, the best starting point is the IRS Free File portal. It is designed to meet the diverse needs of American taxpayers, ensuring that filing taxes is no longer a daunting task.
