Ompari Pay® Launches at Kyoto's Ginkaku-ji to Enhance Worship Experience

Introduction

In a historic move for enhancing the visitor experience at religious sites, a new cashless payment system known as Ompari Pay® was launched at Ginkaku-ji (Temple of Silver Pavilion) on June 19, 2026. Developed collaboratively by Value Design and the Kyoto Buddhist Association, this initiative aims to streamline donation processes and improve convenience for worshippers amidst rising cashless payment demands.

Ginkaku-ji: A Historical Overview

Ginkaku-ji, established in 1482, is one of Japan’s most renowned temples, alongside its sister temple, Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion). As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it symbolizes the rich cultural heritage of Eastern Kyoto, attracting countless visitors each year. With an increasing number of worshippers opting for cashless solutions, Ginkaku-ji recognized the urgency to adapt to these changing preferences and enhance the overall experience.

Introducing Ompari Pay®

Ompari Pay® is a specialized cashless payment service designed specifically for temples and shrines. Under the guidance of the Kyoto Buddhist Association, the service is tailored to meet the unique operational realities of these spiritual sites, ensuring both efficiency and convenience for visitors.

The main features of Ompari Pay® include:
1. Segregation of Sacred and Secular: Transactions are limited to temple and shrine activities, distinctly separating religious operations from commercial activities.
2. Protection of Religious Freedom: The specific names of temples or shrines utilizing Ompari Pay® will not be disclosed to payment processors, ensuring privacy and respect.
3. Prevention of Fraud: By limiting participating temples and imposing spending caps, the system helps mitigate potential misuse and protects devotees.
4. Operational Efficiency: The digital management of sales and payments supports administrative streamlining at temples and shrines.

Comments from Ginkaku-ji’s Abbot

Abbot Sōjun Sato expressed his enthusiasm for this new payment method, emphasizing the temple's commitment to offering a welcoming environment while respecting individual faith practices.
