SailGP and DP World Launch Innovative Women's Performance Camp
Following the exciting conclusion of the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix, presented by P&O Marinas, SailGP has made a significant stride toward gender equality in sailing with the introduction of a Women's Performance Camp, organized in collaboration with DP World. This transformative initiative stands out as the league's most extensive program aimed at developing female athletes, providing them with the equivalent of two seasons of water training within just two days, specifically held on November 25 and 26 at Mina Rashid, Dubai.
With the support of DP World, SailGP's global logistics partner, the camp brought together 18 talented female athletes for an intensive training schedule aboard three F50 catamarans. The program included targeted training tailored to individual positions, three bespoke practice races, and skill development sessions alongside male athletes. This initiative resonates deeply with SailGP's vision to promote gender equality, aiming for each team to have two female athletes in key positions by 2030.
Fiona Morgan, SailGP's Director of Purpose, expressed enthusiasm about the camp, stating, "The SailGP Women's Performance Camp, powered by DP World, kicked off the 2025 season with a push towards transforming sailing. This initiative underscores our commitment to gender equality through impactful on-water training programs. The progress made in just two days was phenomenal, showcasing that empowerment comes from pushing boundaries and redefining possibilities. The future of sailing lies in unity, with men and women leading together."
Adding to this sentiment, Abdulla bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World in the GCC, noted, "We are proud to support this innovative initiative that empowers SailGP athletes and drives inclusion. This camp marks a crucial step towards fostering diversity and creating opportunities for women to excel in competitive sailing."
Liv Mackay, a member of the New Zealand SailGP team, emphasized the camp's significance, saying, "This women's performance camp is a game changer. Having 18 women on the water, gaining this level of experience, is a huge advancement."
The camp follows the announcement of DP World's partnership with SailGP. As a new global logistics partner, DP World will oversee the sustainable and efficient transport and delivery of SailGP's racing materials throughout its global calendar. This three-season collaboration commenced at the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix and highlights both organizations' commitment to innovation and progress in the sport.
Looking ahead, SailGP's 2025 season continues with the upcoming ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Auckland, scheduled for January 18 and 19, 2025. With initiatives like the Women's Performance Camp, SailGP is paving the way for more inclusive practices in the sporting arena, ensuring the participation of women is not just encouraged but celebrated in high-level competitive sailing.
