New Exhibit at Katsukaisyu Memorial Museum
The Katsukaisyu Memorial Museum, located in Ota City, Tokyo, has recently unveiled an exciting new exhibit titled
“Following in Kaishu's Footsteps: Young Pioneers' Foreign Experiences.” The exhibit, which opened on November 14, 2023, aims to shed light on the inspiring stories of young individuals during the Meiji era, who were influenced by the teachings of the renowned educator and diplomat, Katsukaisyu.
Background of the Exhibit
Katsukaisyu is celebrated not only for his own travels to America in the 19th century but also for his profound impact on many young minds during that time. While figures like Sakamoto Ryoma are often highlighted for their contributions, many other budding travelers have remained in the shadows of history. This exhibit seeks to rectify that by showcasing newly discovered materials related to 14 young adventurers from the Meiji period. These individuals, who were yet to achieve significant recognition, embarked on journeys around the world to apply Katsukaisyu's teachings in their quest for personal and professional growth.
The letters and documents on display reveal the aspirations and unique experiences of these young people, who were navigating their paths towards success while grasping the ethos of Katsukaisyu. The insights shared in their correspondence are not just historical artifacts; they offer us encouragement and wisdom applicable even in our modern lives.
Highlights of the Exhibit
1. Encounters with Katsukaisyu
The first section examines the connections established between the young adventurers and Katsukaisyu, particularly through their letters. Visitors can delve into stories surrounding their initial interactions and how Katsukaisyu welcomed them at his residence,
Kaishu Shoyaku. Notably, the exhibit features letters from influential figures like Tokufu Soho, who played a crucial role in encouraging young travelers to venture abroad.
2. Support and Encouragement
In another section, the exhibit focuses on Katsukaisyu’s role in supporting these young individuals in their international endeavors. This includes showcasing correspondence that reflects his guidance, reinforcing why his influence remained significant in their journeys. Letters from Tokufu Soho and a young bureaucrat who studied in Germany highlight Katsukaisyu's dedication to nurturing young talent.
3. The Journey Abroad
The final part highlights letters written by young men and women who successfully embarked on their overseas endeavors. Correspondence from students at prestigious institutions such as Boston University, Harvard, and Cambridge, alongside priests working in Shanghai and Manila, paints a vivid picture of their experiences. It reveals the energetic spirit of these youth as they immersed themselves in the dynamic changes of the 19th century.
