Nippan IPS Enters Japanese Market with Creative Characters
Nippan IPS, based in Bunkyo, Tokyo, has announced an exciting initiative through its subsidiary, Ryhsheng Books Ltd., located in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The company has accepted a commissioned project from the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) aimed at expanding the recognition of ten standout characters in the Japanese market. This project aligns with TAICCA's mission to support Taiwanese creators and content in establishing a foothold internationally, particularly in Japan.
The Rise of ‘Kimo Kawa’ in Japan
The characters selected for this initiative embody the unique theme of "Kimo Kawa," a term that translates to “weird and cute.” The characters will be showcased in a temporary pop-up shop titled "#Kimo Kawa怪萌物語 (Guai Mon Wu Yu)" which will be open from June 8 to June 21, 2026, at Daikanyama Tsutaya, a well-known cultural landmark in Shibuya, Tokyo. The pop-up will feature various merchandise inspired by the selected characters, allowing fans to purchase items like stickers, keychains, masking tape, and bags, with prices ranging from 330 to 3,000 yen.
The selection process was rigorous, involving a panel of five experts in the field who assessed each character based on their appeal and potential in the marketplace. With around 196 items planned for display, the event represents a significant step toward enhancing the visibility of Taiwanese creative content in Japan.
Supporting Cultural Exchange
This initiative is not just about merchandise; it’s a strategic effort to foster cultural exchange between Taiwan and Japan. Both Ryhsheng Books and TAICCA aim to bridge the gap between cultures, providing a platform for Taiwanese artists to reach a broader audience. The choice of Daikanyama Tsutaya as the venue—known as a hub for arts and culture—was deliberate, aligning with TAICCA’s vision of bookstores being places where people, culture, and creativity intersect.
Future Predictions: From Japan to the World
TAICCA, established in 2019 under the auspices of the Taiwan Ministry of Culture, has been promoting the international expansion of Taiwanese cultural content. By targeting the Japanese market first, TAICCA hopes to leverage Japan’s unique cultural scene as a launchpad for broader exposure across Asia and eventually worldwide. The long-term goal is to establish a recognized presence for Taiwanese creativity in global markets, expanding beyond regional confines.
In addition to this event, Ryhsheng Books actively seeks to support Taiwanese creators in diversifying their reach and finding new avenues for collaboration within Japan. As they move forward, the aim is clear: to not only introduce new fans to Taiwanese creativity but also to cultivate lasting relationships within the Japanese cultural landscape.
