Cactus Communications, a leading provider of researcher support services, has announced a collaborative research initiative with Kyoto University Hospital, effective March 2026. This innovative study aims to evaluate the impact of their AI-driven English paper writing support tool, Paperpal, on researchers' efficiency in writing and disseminating their findings.
The scope of the research will analyze various factors, including the number of published papers and the proportion of papers that fall within the top 10% of citations. Recent concerns regarding Japan's declining research productivity and international impact have highlighted the importance of enhancing the visibility of research achievements, particularly in the medical field. As researchers face increasing time constraints due to heavy workloads, writing in English presents a significant challenge, especially for those whose first language is not English. This joint effort seeks to clarify, based on real data, how AI-assisted writing tools can contribute to improving productivity in research activities.
Makoto Yuasa, Chief Growth Officer (CGO) at Cactus Communications, stated, "We have continually supported researchers in overcoming linguistic and time constraints to share their scientific outcomes effectively. This research collaboration represents a crucial step in quantitatively assessing the utility of AI writing assistive tools and exploring how they can be adopted in research environments."
Looking ahead, Cactus intends to leverage its partnership with Kyoto University Hospital to lighten the writing burden on researchers, accelerate the communication of research findings, and generate insights on enhancing research productivity through the use of AI tools. The results of this study will be published in academic forums and conferences upon its completion.
