Alaska Airlines Launches Historic Nonstop Flight from Seattle to Rome
Alaska Airlines has taken a significant step forward in its international growth by launching its inaugural nonstop flight between Seattle and Rome. This historical route, which began on April 28, 2026, represents Alaska's first direct connection to the European market, further cementing its status as a global airline. The flight will operate seasonally on a daily basis until October 23, 2026.
The introduction of this service comes hand-in-hand with Alaska Airlines' new international business class experience, featuring private suites designed to enhance passenger comfort. This initiative underscores the airline's commitment to improving its onboard offerings as it expands its networks in Asia and Europe.
Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Air Group, described the launch as a critical milestone in the airline's long-term growth strategy: "Adding a flight to Rome expands opportunities for connecting our guests to the world and strengthens Seattle's role as a global hub, thanks to our dedicated staff who ensure safety and exceptional service on every flight."
The seasonal service operates from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome (FCO) and is the only daily direct flight on this route. Departing Seattle at 5:30 PM, the flight arrives in Rome at 1:15 PM local time, giving travelers ample time to immerse themselves in the rich culture, stunning architecture, and exquisite cuisine that Rome offers. Return flights from Rome to Seattle leave at 3:25 PM, providing Italian guests the opportunity to savor the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
Furthermore, this new route will facilitate one of the best connections between Hawaii and Europe, offering travelers from Hawaii a streamlined route to Italy, and vice versa, thus opening new doors for tourists.
Ryan Calkins, chairman of the Port of Seattle, noted that the new direct flight opens one of the largest underserved markets for both business and leisure travelers. The connection not only promotes tourism but also emphasizes shared culinary and cultural interests between the regions.
Ivan Bassato, Chief Aviation Officer for Aeroporti di Roma, expressed excitement about welcoming Alaska Airlines, marking a significant advancement as it adds its first European destination. "This inaugural flight strengthens our position as a leading hub between Europe and North America, particularly aimed at the US West Coast, and reflects our commitment to enhancing quality intercontinental connections that benefit local economies and improve competitiveness."
Additionally, the new route aligns with Alaska Airlines' growing cargo operations, making it the first US passenger airline to offer a daily nonstop cargo service between Seattle and Rome starting April 28. This expanded freight capacity will further enhance trade relations between the Pacific Northwest and Italy, bringing the total number of destinations served by Alaska Airlines' cargo network to 109 worldwide.
Alaska Airlines also unveiled their new international business class suites concurrently with this route launch. The aircraft deployed for this service is a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, featuring the airline’s updated global livery and 34 spacious business class suites designed with international travelers in mind. The suites will reflect Alaska's renowned West Coast hospitality, beginning with a welcome service and a gourmet multi-course meal throughout the flight, including a unique dessert cart from Salt & Straw.
Passengers will enjoy customized amenity kits, luxury bedding, and pillows from Filson, ensuring comfort from takeoff to touchdown. Alaska's business class suites and the service will be further expanded with upcoming routes to London and Tokyo.
To cater specifically to premium guests, select check-in options and lounges will be available at major hubs, including Seattle, to ensure an elevated travel experience.
This advancement in international travel comes with a strong internet connectivity initiative, as Alaska Airlines plans to equip its entire 787-9 fleet with Starlink, providing passengers with complimentary in-flight WiFi for seamless connectivity.
As Alaska Airlines forges ahead in expanding its international footprint, this exciting new route to Rome marks not just an expansion of its service horizon, but a gateway for cultural exchange and enhanced travel experiences for passengers on both sides of the Atlantic.
