K2 Space Secures $500 Million Series D Funding to Expand Satellite Production

K2 Space, known for its innovative approach to high-power satellite manufacturing, has made headlines with its recent announcement of securing $500 million in a Series D funding round. This significant investment values the company at an impressive $6.8 billion, highlighting its growing importance in the aerospace sector.

The funding round was spearheaded by Kleiner Perkins and ICONIQ, alongside other notable investors such as CapitalG, Lightspeed, Altimeter, Spark Capital, Sands Capital, ARK Invest, and T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. This financial backing will enable K2 Space to further enhance its capabilities and accelerate the production of large, high-power satellites, an area where the company has established itself as a leader.

Karan Kunjur, co-founder and CEO of K2 Space, articulated the company’s vision since its inception. “When my brother Neel and I started K2 four years ago, we took a contrarian bet that building bigger would be the future for exploring and developing space,” he stated. This funding not only validates their vision but also equips them with the necessary capital to scale production significantly, aiming to manufacture up to 100 large satellites annually.

The demand for high-power satellites is fueled by various sectors, including commercial markets and national security programs. Lucas Oliveira, a principal at Kleiner Perkins, commented on the strategic foresight of K2 Space, indicating that every critical mission in space is reliant on power and mass. K2 Space has effectively recognized these needs and invested its efforts in creating robust engineering solutions that will allow greater capabilities in orbit.

With an innovative approach to manufacturing, K2 Space develops over 85% of its satellite platforms in-house, which affords the company greater control over costs and production timelines. Their manufacturing facility, spanning 180,000 square feet in Torrance, California, is expertly designed to meet the growing demand, ensuring that the company is well-equipped for future expansion.
