The Ogawa Project: Reviving Island Fun Through Marine Plastic Art

Reviving the Ogawa Project: Where Art Meets Sustainability

In 2023, the NPO Karatsu Farm & Food, based in Saga Prefecture's Karatsu City, initiated the Ogawa Project on the small island of Ogawajima, focusing on creating art from marine plastics. This project not only brings awareness to the issue of ocean pollution but also encourages community participation by blending art with sustainability. After a brief hiatus, the project is back in full swing, aiming to produce flying discs crafted from marine plastics.

A Unique Experience: From Creation to Play

The central theme of the revived Ogawa Project is to not only create flying discs from marine plastic but also to engage the island's inhabitants in playing with them. This hands-on experience allows community members to witness the transformational journey of waste into a resource through recreation.

The project's revival was influenced by a poignant observation from a student intern regarding the importance of sustainability, prompting old and new members to collaborate towards energizing their island. The enthusiasm of local high school graduates returning to boost their community motivates a sense of continuity and hope for a sustainable future on Ogawajima.

Collaborative Design Through Voting

The design of the flying discs is set to be determined through a series of votes on Instagram. Participants can choose their favorite design from three options, each inspired by the island’s whaling heritage, and capture a glimpse into the community's creativity.

Campaign Details:

Announcement of Winners:

Winners will be directly notified via DM from the official Instagram account post-campaign. To ensure fairness, participants must remain followers until the end of the voting process, and winners who do not respond within five days will forfeit their prize. This ensures a transparent process that respects the community and promotes ongoing engagement.

The Impact of the Ogawa Project

The Ogawa Project stands as a beacon of innovative collaboration aimed at addressing marine plastic issues through community-driven art. By engaging local students in environmental issues, it not only empowers the next generation but also invites them to take an active role in the stewardship of their island. The aim is to cultivate a sustainable relationship with their environment that extends beyond the small island.

Future plans include utilizing the completed flying discs in local events across Ogawajima and broader interactions with surrounding islands, fostering a continued sense of community and sustainability. The Ogawa Project is more than just art; it embodies a commitment to environmental stewardship and cultural heritage, one flying disc at a time.
