Engaging Middle School Students in Sustainable Future Through a Special SDGs Card Game Lesson

Engaging Future Generations in Sustainability through Card Games

On March 2, 2026, the Pal System Gunma, led by chairperson Makiko Ohira, will host a special SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) lesson at Terauo Middle School in Takasaki City. This event, scheduled from 8:50 AM to 10:40 AM, is designed for approximately 60 third-year students as they prepare for graduation. The focus of the lesson will be on understanding social challenges and personal responsibilities to create a more sustainable world.

Experiencing Global Balance through Project Simulation

The Pal System Gunma staff will facilitate a card game titled '2030 SDGs', which allows students to engage in a hands-on learning experience. Students will be equipped with cards representing financial resources and time to tackle various projects such as enhancing transportation infrastructure and enforcing anti-poaching laws.

As students complete each project, they will witness changes in the social, economic, and environmental balance of the world around them. This immersive simulation enables them to navigate various pathways toward the 2030 goals, empowering them to comprehend the necessity of the SDGs and the potential impact of individual actions.

Understanding the Societal Effects of Their Actions

Through the card game, students will receive cards that symbolize their project's accomplishments, helping them to comprehend the broader societal consequences of their actions. The goal is to foster an understanding of how interconnected the various aspects of sustainability are and how each decision can drive significant change.

This initiative by Pal System Gunma, which has been in collaboration with educational institutions since 2019 through its 'SDGs School Action' program, aims to spread awareness of sustainable practices. They introduce practical examples of their efforts towards achieving the SDGs, highlighting the urgent need to address environmental and social issues.

Beginning from the 2021 academic year, Pal System Gunma has been involved with Terauo Middle School, enhancing exchanges focused on fundamental learning about SDGs and organizing food drives. As these students approach graduation, they will contemplate how they, as the next generation, can contribute to building sustainable communities.
