Park24's Survey Reveals Insights into Street Parking Awareness and Behavior

Understanding the Public's Perspective on Street Parking

Park24 Inc., headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, initiated a survey to gauge the awareness and attitudes surrounding street parking among its Times Club members. This survey was conducted as part of their ongoing campaign to raise awareness and prevent street parking issues, especially leading up to August 9, which they recognized as 'Park Day' back in 1998. The aim of this day is to encourage people to consider the various social problems stemming from street parking and to strive for a society free of it.

Background and Importance of the Survey

Despite the fact that enforcement actions against parking violations have been decreasing over the years—dropping below one million cases since 2021—the dangers associated with improperly parked vehicles continue to be a significant challenge. The police reported 1,341 traffic accidents caused by parked vehicles in 2024 alone, resulting in the tragic loss of 22 lives. Additionally, street parking contributes to traffic congestion and obstructs emergency vehicles, emphasizing the multi-faceted problems it creates.

The survey reveals that an overwhelming 81% of drivers have felt endangered while driving due to street parking. This alarming statistic underscores the need for a deeper understanding of both the causes and consequences of this behavior.

Survey Findings: Street Parking Experiences

Interestingly, when asked about their previous experiences, respondents were split evenly, with 50% indicating they have parked on the street and 50% claiming they have not. However, the data changes when focusing on the last two years: only 21% confirmed they had engaged in street parking, marking the lowest percentage since the survey's inception.

Reasons for Street Parking

Among those who had parked on the street within the past two years, the most cited reason—at 67%—was that they did not think it warranted the time to find a parking space. Following this, 43% indicated the lack of nearby parking facilities as their reason, while just 6% reported that they deliberately avoided paying for parking. This suggests that a perception exists that street parking is acceptable for short durations, further complicated by inadequate parking infrastructure.

Reasons for Ceasing Street Parking

For those who had previously parked on the street but had not done so in the past two years, the top reason for reducing street parking activities—50% of respondents—was the increased enforcement of parking regulations. Additionally, 37% acknowledged their understanding of the dangers of street parking, while 29% noted the increase in available parking spaces as a contributing factor. This data indicates a shift in public awareness, driven by stricter regulations and a growing recognition of public safety risks associated with street parking.

Conclusion and Future Directions

Overall, this survey demonstrates a positive trend toward reduced street parking, supported by heightened awareness of its risks and stricter enforcement policies. Nevertheless, it's crucial to address the needs of drivers who still resort to street parking due to a lack of accessible and convenient alternatives. By improving the availability of parking facilities, Park24 aims to not only foster a decline in street parking incidents but also to mitigate related societal challenges.

As Park24 continues to expand its Times Parking initiative, the company remains committed to promoting a safer driving environment where everyone can park their vehicles conveniently and responsibly. Their efforts will accompany ongoing educational campaigns such as 'Park Day' to further advocate for a safe, street-parking-free society.

Survey Methodology

The survey was conducted among Times Club members who joined after March 2, 2025, and had used Park24 services recently. The anonymous internet survey took place from March 2 to March 10, 2026, gathering valid responses from 4,752 participants. Note that the summary percentages may not total 100% due to rounding.
