Walk to End Lupus Now® Events Bring Community Together in the Fight Against Lupus
This fall, the Lupus Foundation of America will host the much-anticipated 2025 Walk to End Lupus Now® events across 36 cities. With participation from thousands of individuals nationwide, this series of events is the largest of its kind in the country, designed to raise critical funds for lupus research, education, and support, while simultaneously fostering connections within the lupus community.
Lupus is a complex chronic autoimmune disease affecting around 1.5 million people in the United States alone. It leads to inflammation and pain throughout the body, showcasing diverse symptoms that can severely impact a person's quality of life. Commonly reported symptoms range from extreme fatigue and cognitive disruptions to life-threatening complications involving organs. Notably, lupus disproportionately impacts women, with approximately 90% of those diagnosed being female, and it poses a greater risk to various ethnic groups, including Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, and Asian/Pacific Islander populations.
The Walk to End Lupus Now events not only serve as fundraisers but also as gatherings of hope, resilience, and commitment to a shared cause. Attendees can expect to enjoy inspiring speeches from notable guests, live entertainment, and educational booths that provide valuable resources and information about lupus. Moreover, the events encourage networking opportunities with individuals, businesses, and organizations that are determined to help eliminate the impact of lupus.
Louise Vetter, the President and CEO of the Lupus Foundation of America, emphasizes the significance of these gatherings, stating, “Each walk is filled with energy, determination, and a shared commitment to creating a better future for everyone impacted by lupus.” This sentiment resonates with community members who see the walks as a vibrant expression of solidarity and support for lupus patients and their families.
Participants in the Walk to End Lupus Now are encouraged to create teams and invite friends and family to join them. This initiative not only amplifies awareness about lupus but also provides a platform to raise funds essential for ongoing research and support services that directly benefit individuals living with the condition.
Joe Arnold, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Lupus Foundation of America, notes the critical importance of the fundraising efforts: “Federal funding challenges threaten lupus research and limit access to care, so every step taken at the Walk to End Lupus Now carries even greater weight.” His message underscores that community involvement is vital for maintaining the foundation's life-saving programs, advocacy, and research initiatives.
