Okayama University Weight Training Club Shines at World University Cup
In an impressive display at the
World University Cup held in Istanbul from July 16th to 20th, 2025, members of the
Okayama University Weight Training Club conquered the competition, setting new Japanese student records. The event took place at the glamorous
Bülmann Istanbul Hotel and Convention Center, with participants hailing from around the world.
Achievements of the Athletes
Hiroki Sugino, a third-year student from the Faculty of Education, and
Ayumi Oka, a third-year student from the Faculty of Literature, represented Japan on this global stage. Sugino made headlines with his outstanding performance in the men’s 83 kg class, clinching the
eighth place overall while achieving remarkable new Japanese student records in the deadlift and total weight lifted. He successfully lifted:
- - Squat: 242.5 kg
- - Bench Press: 165 kg
- - Deadlift: 272.5 kg
- - Total: 680 kg (New Japanese Student Record)
Meanwhile, Oka also shined, finishing
sixth in the women's 47 kg category with her cumulative total of:
- - Squat: 90 kg
- - Bench Press: 42.5 kg
- - Deadlift: 97.5 kg
- - Total: 230 kg
Path to the World Cup
The selection of Sugino and Oka for this prestigious event was determined based on their performances at the
51st All Japan Student Powerlifting Championships held in November last year. The stakes were high at the World Cup, with
