Shaw Industries Introduces Innovative Testing Method for PFAS Detection

Shaw Industries has taken a pivotal step in ensuring environmental safety by inventing a novel testing methodology aimed at detecting PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in various materials and processes. This groundbreaking technique was birthed out of the company's proactive approach to sustainability, especially as it pertains to its manufacturing operations.

Since phasing out PFAS-based materials in its U.S. carpet products in January 2019, Shaw has been at the forefront of addressing these environmentally harmful substances. Despite contractual commitments to use PFAS-free products from suppliers, a gap remained in testing procedures. It was revealed that many suppliers were often unaware that PFAS existed in the materials they were selling to companies. Therefore, an effective testing methodology become a pronounced necessity.

Kellie Ballew, the vice president of environmental affairs at Shaw, highlighted the challenges faced when utilizing conventional testing methods. "When materials we purchased were tested using existing protocols, they would show non-detect for PFAS, but what we discovered is that drinking water testing wasn't accurate for soaps, oils, resins, and other solid materials— really anything other than drinking water," Ballew explained. With existing methodologies falling short, Shaw took matters into its own hands and developed a solution.

The new testing process carefully prepares test samples by mimicking real-world conditions such as time, temperature, and pH levels that materials typically experience during industrial use. This innovative approach reveals PFAS residues that might otherwise remain undetected in the composition of the materials.

As a result of unveiling this new methodology, Shaw Industries has successfully identified PFAS in over 60 different materials that were previously reported as having non-detectable levels of these substances. This significant achievement underscores the necessity for rigorous testing and continuous improvement within the industry.

Feedback from collaborators and suppliers about this new process has been overwhelmingly positive, and after validating its ease of use, Shaw's aim is to share this patent-pending technique widely. Ballew expressed, "This isn't just a carpet issue or a manufacturing issue. Until chemical manufacturers stop producing PFAS, companies that are serious about eliminating these substances from their supply chains need to adopt diligent testing practices. By sharing our testing innovation, we hope to streamline the efforts of others working towards the same goal."

The groundwork for this innovative methodology was laid by Shaw scientist Clay Hampton, who centered the design on how to prepare test samples effectively. The methodology focuses on replicating the conditions under which materials are typically subjected in an industrial environment to expose any PFAS substances that might remain hidden.
