Moldova's Digital ID Integration: A Milestone in Banking

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Moldova eGovernance Agency has rolled out the usage of digital identity credentials developed in accordance with European standards through its integrated EVO app. This initiative is being adopted by several banks across the country, including Moldindconbank, FinComBank, EuroCreditBank, and Victoriabank, allowing customers to utilize these digital credentials for identification during banking transactions.

A New Era for Identity Verification

With the implementation of the EVO platform, customers can now verify their identities by simply scanning a QR code. This seamless process enhances user experience, ensuring that required information can be securely shared with the banks. The evolution of these digital proofs demonstrates Moldova's commitment to advancing public and private sector interaction via a trustworthy digital identity.

The launch of this system represents a broader strategy aimed at standardizing secure digital identities across the nation and aligning with the developing European digital identity ecosystem. The integration of EVO into the banking sector is just the beginning. Since its initial rollout on April 1, 2026, the eGovernance Agency has expanded partnerships beyond banking, now including over 30 organizations in various stages of integration. Notable entities such as one of Moldova's largest telecommunications providers and the National Bank of Moldova are part of this growing network. This move aims at having at least 20 organizations fully operational by the end of 2026.

Nicoleta Colomeeț, Director of the Moldova eGovernance Agency, underscored the importance of daily usability for digital proofs in real-world situations, particularly within financial institutions where credible identification is crucial. The introduction of EVO into the banking processes represents a significant step in achieving widespread adoption of digital identities in Moldova.

Towards European Interoperability

In support of its aspirations towards European integration, Moldova is working on adapting the EVO Wallet to comply with the European Digital Identity (EUDI) standards. By leveraging its experience in digital identity proofs, Moldova is engaging with European partners through the WE BUILD consortium to validate digital identity credentials and address inconsistencies between national approaches. Successful tests of the digital ID and the digital driver's license have already been conducted in collaboration with partners from France, Hungary, Austria, and Belgium.

The development of a comprehensive digital identity framework is crucial for Moldova, especially as it seeks EU membership. Incorporating initiatives such as the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and the “Roam Like at Home” policy, Moldova's efforts will foster the creation of interoperable digital wallet solutions for secure citizen verification and information exchange.
