Vanguard Partners with Amazon Alexa for Simplified Proxy Voting Navigation

Vanguard Teams Up with Amazon Alexa: A New Era for Proxy Voting

Vanguard has officially joined hands with Amazon to launch an innovative feature that allows investors to navigate proxy voting seamlessly through voice commands using Amazon Alexa. The program, dubbed Vanguard Investor Choice, significantly enhances the accessibility of investment decision-making for countless investors.

A New Way to Participate

With the advancement of technology and growing reliance on voice-activated devices, Vanguard has stepped into the future of investing by enabling a hands-free approach to engaging with their comprehensive proxy voting program. Investors can now simply say, “Alexa, take me to Vanguard Investor Choice,” and in an instant, they can access valuable information about the program and even directly enroll.

Launched in early 2023, Vanguard Investor Choice is touted as the largest retail proxy voting choice program globally. It empowers individual investors to voice their opinions on critical matters concerning shareholder decisions at the portfolio companies represented in their Vanguard funds. Notably, Vanguard's research indicates that a significant majority — around 83% — of investors believe asset managers should consider their preferences in proxy voting processes, with over half wishing to actively participate in such voting initiatives.

Simplified Process for Investors

The venture leverages Amazon’s Brand Innovation Lab to create an engaging and straightforward user experience. For users with Echo Show devices, the program offers visually enriching content and an interactive walkthrough that makes understanding proxy voting options easier at a glance. On devices without screens, like the Echo Dot, the voice-based guide serves the purpose with equivalent ease. At the end of this interactive experience, users have the option of receiving a direct link via SMS to the enrollment page, ensuring a frictionless transition from inquiry to action.

Aiming for Broader Inclusion

Vanguard has set an ambitious goal — to expand the Vanguard Investor Choice program to cover every U.S. equity index fund by the end of 2027, thus broadening its reach to an estimated $6.4 trillion in assets. The initiative underscores Vanguard's dedication to inclusivity in investor engagement, aligning with its philosophy that proxy voting is an integral aspect of corporate governance.

John Galloway, Vanguard’s Global Head of Investor Engagement, emphasized this commitment, stating, “Shareholder participation is the heartbeat of a healthy corporate governance ecosystem.” The collaboration with Amazon represents a significant stride in making proxy voting accessible, timely, and reflective of individual investor voices.

How to Get Started

To delve into Vanguard Investor Choice, interested investors can activate their Alexa-enabled devices and say the activation phrase. Alternatively, the program can also be accessed through Vanguard’s dedicated website, where investors can find clear, one-click enrollment instructions tailored for both Vanguard and third-party brokerage clients.

The Vanguard Legacy

The organization's ethos revolves around championing the interests of their shareholders, ensuring they receive fair treatment and the best opportunities for financial success.
