A Unique Summer Escape: Understanding Fatigue and Rest
This summer, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, commonly known as the Miraikan, will host a special exhibition titled "Escape from Fatigue: The Science of Resting Well" from July 16 to September 15, 2025. This interactive experience aims to help participants explore effective ways to manage fatigue, a common issue in today's fast-paced society.
Addressing a National Concern
In Japan, fatigue has become a widespread concern, often referred to as a national ailment. According to a survey by the Japan Recovery Association, approximately 78% of adults reported feeling fatigued, while a separate study indicated that around 52% of middle school students experience ongoing fatigue for more than a month. The situation has grown especially critical in recent years due to the lingering effects of COVID-19, which has led to increased research on debilitating fatigue.
Exhibition Highlights
Visitors to the exhibition can begin their journey by learning about the mechanisms behind fatigue and how it manifests in our bodies. The exhibit will explain how fatigue and the perception of fatigue are formed, providing insights into measurement techniques and physiological responses.
The second half of the exhibition invites participants to engage in various activities to discover personalized relaxation methods. Options will range from digital forest bathing to gentle physical activities, cooking, or indulging in hobbies. Attendees will have access to a variety of wellness products designed for relaxation, helping them identify the most suitable recovery strategies for their needs.
Additionally, guests will have an opportunity to share their preferred ways of unwinding with others, which may lead to discovering new and unexpected relaxation techniques.
