West Virginia American Water Announces $1.6 Million Infrastructure Project in South Charleston
West Virginia American Water recently disclosed a significant investment of
$1.6 million aimed at upgrading
infrastructure in South Charleston. This initiative marks the commencement of a multi-phase project that focuses specifically on the aging systems within the
Armour View area.
The first stage of this venture will consist of installing
1,800 feet of new
8-inch water main on
Lincoln Drive, extending from
Rock Lake Presbyterian Church to
Chestnut Street. Work on Lincoln Drive is slated to kick off on
April 13, with an estimated completion by mid-August. Concurrently, another facet of the project will involve replacing
820 feet of the existing
water main on
Chestnut Street with a new
6-inch main, from Lincoln Drive to Upton Drive. This segment is scheduled to commence in early May and wrap up by mid-July.
The President of West Virginia American Water,
Scott Wyman, emphasized the company's commitment to enhancing local infrastructure, stating: "We appreciate our partnership with the City of South Charleston and are closely coordinating with
Mayor Frank Mullens as we create more resilient infrastructure for these communities."
This multi-phase project is crucial as it aims to bolster reliability, improve water services, and significantly reduce the risk of disruptive water main breaks. The investment reflects West Virginia American Water's broader strategy of committing
$134 million in infrastructure improvements throughout the year, with expectations of stimulating local economies; estimates suggest that every
$1 million in water infrastructure spending generates approximately
10 jobs in the local markets.
In the past decade, the company has invested over
$805 million into infrastructure projects across the
Mountain State, focusing on addressing aging facilities and improving service delivery. Over the years, West Virginia American Water has successfully installed more than
168 miles of new water mains in its efforts to modernize the water systems it oversees.
During the construction process, residents can expect crews to be active from
7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Weekend work is anticipated only if required to maintain the project schedule. Traffic restrictions will be necessary throughout the project's duration, and the company assures that it will coordinate closely with city officials to minimize disruptions for local bus services.
Residents may also experience temporary inconveniences such as service interruptions, discolored water, or lower-than-normal water pressure. The crews will strive to resolve such issues swiftly, as reported emergencies can be logged on the company’s website for prompt attention.
Looking beyond the immediate project, further phases of infrastructure enhancement are anticipated and will be announced as the project progresses. As communities like South Charleston embrace these vital upgrades, they can look forward to improved water reliability and enhanced service experience in the coming years.
