Compass Group Celebrates Ten Years of Stop Food Waste Day with Advanced Technology Partnerships

Celebrating a Decade of Impact: Stop Food Waste Day

Compass Group North America, a prominent player in the food and support services industry, has recently marked a major milestone—the 10th anniversary of Stop Food Waste Day. This initiative has not only raised awareness but has also catalyzed real and measurable changes in how food waste is managed across the company's operations.

In the past year alone, the organization saw a year-over-year reduction in food waste of 11% across its kitchens in North America. This substantial decrease indicates a concerted effort to divert food waste from landfills, showing that saving ingredients is not just a best practice but a reality in the food industry.

A Vision for Change

During this celebration, Palmer Brown, the CEO of Compass Group North America, emphasized the journey that began ten years ago. “Stop Food Waste Day initiated as a campaign to raise awareness. Today, it has evolved into a global movement that influences operational changes within our business,” he stated. The success experienced thus far showcases that minimizing food waste on this scale is achievable through practical and replicable methods. Now, the aim is set on harnessing technology, data, and behavioral adjustments within kitchens to exacerbate this positive impact.

The necessity to tackle food waste is at an all-time high. As per ReFed, approximately one-third of food produced globally is wasted every year, which equates to over $400 billion in lost value, along with significant greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing this issue remains vital not just for sustainability, but for improving the overall efficiency of the food system.

Partnering for Progress

To bolster its commitment, Compass Group has entered into a strategic collaboration with Mill Industries Inc., a company dedicated to waste prevention technologies. This partnership aims at deploying the Mill Commercial system beginning in 2027. The innovative system reduces food waste’s physical volume on-site by as much as 80%, thereby minimizing hauling needs and operational costs. Furthermore, the food scraps are transformed into a nutrient-rich output suitable for composting or animal feed.

This advanced system combines real-time image recognition with operational data, offering kitchen teams valuable insights into waste—what is wasted, when, and the reasons behind it. By incorporating these analytics into daily workflows, kitchens can proactively modify purchasing, preparation, and production practices, significantly mitigating waste before it occurs.

Achievements of the Past Decade

Throughout the past decade, Compass Group has being diligent in embedding food waste reduction into their everyday operational strategies. This dedication fostered a culture of measurable change across not only their business models but also the wider food service industry. Collaborations with outside entities like Careit and Chefs to End Hunger, aimed at redirecting surplus food to underserved communities, have further reinforced this commitment to sustainability.

Looking Towards The Future

As Compass Group steps into the next chapter of Stop Food Waste Day's legacy, their focus remains on amplifying solutions that intertwine technology, data analytics, and human behavior to diminish waste even further. “Food waste offers one of the most actionable opportunities for enhancing the sustainability of our food system,” added Brown. Through this commitment, Compass aims to continue leading the way and demonstrate what’s achievable in food service practices.
