Kamei Corporation Launches the First Ship-to-Ship HVO Supply in Japan



In a groundbreaking move, Kamei Corporation, headquartered in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, has commenced its innovative fuel supply service by starting Japan's first-ever Ship-to-Ship (STS) delivery of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) at Keihin Port. Developed in collaboration with Euglena Co., Ltd., this next-generation biofuel brand, referred to as “Susteo,” is made from waste cooking oils and promises significant advancements in sustainable energy usage.

A New Fuel Supply Model for Port Decarbonization



The new HVO fuels fall under the category of second-generation oils, allowing them to be transported via standard fuel supply vessels. The Ship-to-Ship method enables direct transfer of HVO from fuel vessels to shipping vessels within the port, thereby reducing the load on land-based facilities and enhancing supply flexibility. This initiative not only marks the first instance of HVO supply using this method in Japan but also aims to promote decarbonization across entire port areas.

The usage of “Susteo” as a drop-in fuel implies that existing diesel engines and fuel supply infrastructures can seamlessly operate with it, allowing for smoother transitions in the transportation sector towards lower carbon emissions. It has gained recognition as a crucial component in achieving decarbonization in the maritime and port sectors, promising a sustainable future.

Supporting Sustainable Societies



This project is part of the initiatives supported by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Environmental Public Foundation, as part of the 2024 Technical Development Support Project for New Energy Promotion. With this collaboration, Kamei Corporation, alongside Euglena, seeks to build a stable HVO supply system while gathering operational insights through this demonstration.
