The Launch of Anicom Institute for Healthy Longevity
The launch of the Anicom Institute for Healthy Longevity is set for September 2025. Based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, this foundation aims to promote objective and academic research aimed at extending the healthspan of both humans and pets. The establishment of this foundation is currently in the application process for registration.
Background and Objectives of the Foundation
As both pet longevity and aging become increasingly apparent, extending health lifespan is a vital concern for society. The foundation will work on scientifically exploring and supporting the health of both humans and pets. Anicom Insurance has been a pioneer in pet health by utilizing one of the largest insurance and veterinary data sets in the country for analysis and research. This foundation has been established to contribute the knowledge gained from these endeavors back to society, aiding in academic development and promoting preventive healthcare.
Areas of research will include investigations into the relationship between periodontal disease and systemic disorders, as well as studies on the similarities in microbiota between humans and pets. The research outcomes will not only contribute to dental and veterinary medicine but will also promote awareness in academia and broader society.
Key Activities of the Foundation
- - Research on extending healthspan in humans and pets: Aimed at understanding better ways to promote health in both species.
- - Social contributions of research outcomes: Through conferences, publications, and public lectures, the foundation intends to disseminate its findings.
- - Support for the establishment of clinical guidelines: This will be achieved through research findings that can serve as a basis for future healthcare.
- - Health examinations related to dentistry: Offering thorough checks and health guidance to ensure oral health in pets and humans.
- - Grants and scholarships: Supporting education and research in relevant fields.
Board of Directors
The establishment of the foundation includes a distinguished board of directors with advanced knowledge and practical experience across dental, medical, and veterinary fields. Notably, Dr. Yuko Terayam, a dentist actively involved in advocacy for oral health, will serve as the representative director. Other board members include Dr. Akihiro Amano, a recognized authority in periodontal disease and biofilm research, and Wataru Nishida, who has worked extensively on the interplay between periodontal disease and diabetes, alongside promoting cooperative healthcare practices between dental and medical fields.
Comments from Board Members
Dr. Yuko Terayam (Dentist, PhD)
“Oral and dental health is foundational to daily life, serving as the ‘source of life.’ The same applies to our beloved pets. This foundation aims to bridge academic research between veterinary and medical fields, becoming a key station for promoting holistic health.”
Dr. Akihiro Amano (Professor Emeritus, Osaka University)
“Reports indicate that about 80% of dogs and 70% of cats develop periodontal disease by the age of two. The close relationship between periodontal disease and other systemic illnesses in pets is often overlooked. We need to build a preventive dental healthcare model for animals emphasizing their well-being.”
Wataru Nishida (Physician, PhD)
“As an internist, I have discovered that periodontal disease negatively impacts pets' health even more than in humans. Unfortunately, the focus in medicine often lies on diagnosis and treatment rather than prevention. The foundation's aim to promote disease prevention through optimal health in pets is expected to contribute positively to human society as well.”
Future Directions
The foundation intends to widely share research findings through webinars, articles in specialized journals, and academic lectures, enhancing societal awareness. There are also plans to strengthen collaborations with universities and research institutions both domestically and internationally, aiming to build a research network that benefits human and pet health alike.
Upcoming Seminar Announcement
In September 2025, Dr. Yuko Terayam and Dr. Akihiro Amano will host a seminar on the topic of “Oral Care and Health.” Detailed information will be provided as the arrangements are finalized, furthering the foundation's mission to educate the community about healthy longevity in both humans and pets.
