The Captivating World of Upcycled Daruma Art
From April 26 to May 6, 2025, the Hankyu Umeda Main Store in Osaka will host a popup exhibition featuring the innovative Upcycled Daruma known as "Amedaruma." This event, organized by a company focused on creative production,
to anyone, highlights a unique blend of tradition and modern design. With the backdrop of the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo, an influx of international tourists is expected to explore this extraordinary showcase.
The Popup Event at Hankyu Umeda
An Invitation to Discover Japanese Craftsmanship
The popup store, titled "Zipang: Young Craft Artists," invites guests to experience the fine craftsmanship of Japan. Located in
Koto Koto Stage 31 on the third floor of the Hankyu Umeda Main Store, this exhibition provides a platform for visitors to engage with the unique Amedaruma pieces that blend traditional Daruma designs with contemporary art elements.
Co-exhibiting with
ACRAFT, a creative collaboration that utilizes discarded materials, this popup is not just about art; it's about immersing oneself in a culture where traditional craftsmanship meets modern aesthetics. This temporary store aims to reflect the essence of Zipang culture, offering a rare opportunity for attendees to appreciate the intricacies of artisan work.
What is Amedaruma?
Developed with a commitment to sustainable artistry, Amedaruma is an avant-garde take on the traditional Daruma figure. Each piece is handcrafted using waterproof nylon fabric that has been earmarked for disposal, ensuring each creation is not only visually stunning but also environmentally conscious. The unique texture and aesthetic of Amedaruma reflect Japanese spiritual values while enhancing any interior space. Collaborating with
Japan Baro Co., Ltd., led by Creative Director Aoi Shimizu, this project aims to give new life to materials that would otherwise go to waste, presenting a compelling narrative of waste reduction through art.
Exhibition at Azabu Malaysia
In addition to the popup at Hankyu Umeda, Amedaruma will be showcased at Azabu Malaysia, a high-end Japanese restaurant operated by
Plan Do See. This limited-time exhibition offers patrons the chance to dine on exquisite food crafted by sushi chefs while being surrounded by these captivating works of art. The display fits seamlessly into the restaurant's architectural design, enhancing the dining experience by deeply connecting it to the rich tapestry of Japanese culture.
About Azabu Malaysia
Azabu Malaysia is not just a restaurant; it's a celebration of Japan's sophisticated culinary traditions paired with a modern twist. Aimed at Malaysia's affluent class and international tourists, it presents the finest aspects of Japanese cuisine. Through the exhibition of Amedaruma, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of Japan's cultural depth, making their dining experience not just about food but also about appreciation of art and tradition.
