Research!America Welcomes Russ Paulsen
On April 7, 2026, Research!America, a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for science, innovation, and better health outcomes, made a significant announcement: Russ Paulsen has been appointed as its new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective May 4. This position comes on the heels of Mary Woolley’s retirement, marking a new chapter for the organization.
A New Era in Leadership
Dr. Sudip Parikh, Chair of the Board at Research!America, expressed his excitement about the new appointment. He stated, “I am thrilled to welcome Russ Paulsen to Research!America as our next President and CEO. Russ is a passionate and skillful advocate on behalf of medical research, as well as a proven nonprofit leader.” Parikh's endorsement highlights the confidence that the board has in Paulsen to guide the organization into its next phase, focusing on the importance of continued advocacy for biomedical research.
Paulsen comes to Research!America with a wealth of experience, previously serving as the President and COO of UsAgainstAlzheimer's, where he initiated the United for Cures coalition, bringing together multiple patient advocacy groups. His previous roles at United Way Worldwide and the American Red Cross further demonstrate his extensive background in nonprofit leadership and advocacy.
Paulsen's Vision for Research!America
Expressing his gratitude and excitement for his new role, Paulsen remarked, “It is an honor to be named President and CEO of this essential organization, and I am excited to work with this tremendous board and dedicated staff team.” He goes on to emphasize the critical need for advocates in the medical research sector, stating, “Overwhelming majorities of Americans — from across the political spectrum — support federal investment in research, but it is under threat nonetheless.”
As the largest coalition representing patient groups, scientific societies, research institutions, corporations, and philanthropies, Research!America is poised under Paulsen’s leadership to maintain and expand its advocacy efforts for federal investment in medical research.
Educational Background
Russ Paulsen holds a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of California, Riverside, and a master’s degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley.
