Cork's Prominence Grows in the UK Retail Wine Market: Insights from APCOR

Cork's Growing Presence in the UK Retail Wine Market

The UK wine market is witnessing a significant shift, with cork-sealed wines emerging as a strong quality indicator, outperforming their screwcap counterparts. This trend is substantiated by recent research commissioned by the Portuguese Cork Association (APCOR), which reveals that cork-sealed wines are not only commanding higher prices but also achieving substantial growth in sales and market presence.

Cork-Sealed Wines: A Premium Choice

According to the research, cork-sealed wines sold in the UK's top 250 off-trade channels retail at an average price of £8.19 per bottle, noticeably higher than the average price of £6.93 for screwcap wines. This price premium for cork has increased from 12.6% in 2021 to 18.2% in 2026, showcasing a growing correlation between cork and perceived wine value. Over the past year, cork-sealed wines generated an impressive £344 million in sales, marking a year-on-year value growth of 5.9%, surpassing the overall market growth of 3.5%.

Quality Perception Drives Sales

The data indicates that as consumers become more discerning with their purchases, they gravitate towards cork-sealed wines when seeking quality and sustainability. Notably, cork accounts for 54.2% of sales value in wines priced above £10 and an impressive 72.2% for wines above £12. This pattern suggests that consumers are willing to invest more in wines that offer a clear indicator of quality, supporting the narrative that cork is synonymous with premium products.

Accessible Luxury: Cork in Mainstream Brands

Interestingly, the success of cork is not restricted solely to luxury brands. The market for under £10 cork-sealed wines is thriving, with popular brands such as 19 Crimes from Treasury Wine Estates displaying robust growth. This expansion indicates that cork can effectively serve as a quality signal, making it a viable option for mainstream wines without compromising on accessibility. Thus, producers and retailers are encouraged to position cork as a sustainable and quality-oriented choice.

Cork's Market Evolution in White Wine

As consumer preferences shift towards white wines, cork’s share has notably doubled from 11% to 22%, with rosé wines now representing approximately 5% of the market. This evolution emphasizes the value within the trade of diversifying cork usage beyond red wines, reinforcing its significance in expanding categories.

On-Trade Growth and Perceived Value

In the on-trade sector, a separate investigation conducted by NIQ CGA highlights that cork-sealed wines maintain a striking price premium of 74.5% over screwcap wines, up from 20.6% in 2021. On average, natural cork wines command £36.87 per 750ml bottle compared to £21.13 for screwcap alternatives, reflecting a notable price difference of £15.74. Moreover, this trend is mirrored in per-glass pricing, where natural cork wines are priced at £8.60 per 175ml serve versus just £4.93 for screwcap wines. Volume-wise, natural cork sales have risen by 4.4% year-on-year, whereas screwcap sales have seen a slight decline of 1.4%.

Conclusion: A Lasting Trend Towards Quality

Claudia Pimenta, General Director of APCOR, articulates, "This is not simply a story about expensive wine—cork is a quality cue that resonates with consumers across all price points." The findings underline the sustained value attributed to cork-sealed wines, highlighting their appeal as the market continues to trend towards less but better consumption. While less expensive screwcap wines are struggling, the data confirms that cork remains a trusted indicator of quality in the wine industry, reinforcing its commercial value in both retail and on-trade contexts.

With the growing consumer trend towards premiumization and sustainability, cork is well-positioned to maintain its status as a preferred closure in the UK wine market, offering both producers and retailers significant opportunities for growth and consumer engagement.
