Bridging Tradition and Modern Innovation: The 'Illuminating Kokeshi'
In an extraordinary blend of traditional craft and modern technology, a new unique lighting solution called the 'Illuminating Kokeshi' is set to captivate audiences at the Isetan Shinjuku store starting June 17, 2026. This collaboration between Sony Design and the renowned Sakurai Kokeshi has been brought to life with the manufacturing expertise of Murakami Kousakusho, a lighting company based in Taka-cho, Hyogo Prefecture.
The Project’s Vision and 'Illuminating Kokeshi'
The 'Illuminating Kokeshi' resonates with the mission of the 'IN-HOUSE→SOCIAL DESIGN UNIT', an initiative by Sony aimed at harnessing the specialized skills of in-house designers to create innovative cultural artifacts. This project features the creative insights of Sony's designers as they collaborate with the esteemed artisans from Sakurai Kokeshi, who have crafted 'Naruko Kokeshi' dolls for generations in Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture.
The pendant light draws its inspiration from the intricate process of woodturning, reflecting the essence of traditional Kokeshi forms while integrating modern lighting design. The creative efforts involved in this project highlight the interplay of craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics.
Craftsmanship Meets Light
Murakami Kousakusho, known for their commitment to 'shaping culture through light', contributed significantly to the project by focusing on how the craftsmanship of Sakurai Kokeshi can illuminate spaces, transforming mere functionality into a cultural experience. The team meticulously crafted the light to enhance the beauty of the carefully turned wooden forms, maximally showcasing the delicate colors and textures applied by the Sakurai artisans.
Using natural materials, Murakami Kousakusho engineered an innovative lighting mechanism that allows the warm glow of the wood to radiate softly into the surrounding space. Established in 1985, the company has continuously honed its craft, infusing the rich warmth of the wood and the soft light that emanates from it, thereby seamlessly merging with the contemporary lifestyle.
A Harmonious Blend of Craft and Innovation
The 'Illuminating Kokeshi' represents a meeting point between the rich heritage of traditional crafts and a focus on modern living. This unique lighting piece embodies deep craftsmanship while being grounded in cutting-edge design, resulting in a product that is not only visually stunning but also deeply functional. The exhibition will not only showcase the 'Illuminating Kokeshi' but also many other creative Kokeshi interpretations developed by designers from Sony Group and Fujifilm, each bringing their unique perspective to this cultural artifact.
Attendees are invited to experience first-hand the rich relationships created between light and human activities at the exhibition, demonstrating how lighting can play a pivotal role in daily life.
