On June 19, 2025, the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Research will host its second citizen lecture titled "Avian Influenza and Our Lives: Responding with Correct Knowledge." This lecture aims to enlighten citizens about significant research subjects such as neurological diseases, mental disorders, cancer, and infectious diseases, providing insights into prevention and treatment developments.

The event will feature presentations from esteemed experts, including Professor Yoshihiro Sakoda, the Director of the Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine at Hokkaido University, and Fumihiko Yasui, the leader of the Infectious Disease Control Unit at the Tokyo Medical Research Institute's Infectious Disease Medical Research Center.

1. Avian Influenza and Our Lives: Responding with Correct Knowledge
By Professor Yoshihiro Sakoda
- Introduction to the high pathogenic avian influenza virus affecting domesticated birds such as chickens and wild birds, including migratory species and crows. The talk will focus on the global implications of this issue, which impacts both domestic and international communities. Attendees will gain insights into the underlying causes and the escalating nature of the problem over recent years. Furthermore, strategies will be examined from the perspectives of protecting livestock, conserving wildlife, and preventing human infections.

2. Fundamental Research on Prevention and Treatment of High Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus Infection
By Dr. Fumihiko Yasui
- Dr. Yasui will discuss seasonal outbreaks of the high pathogenic avian influenza virus in poultry farms, emphasizing the significant damage caused to poultry. While human infections are rare, there have been instances of fatalities worldwide, underscoring the critical need for accurate knowledge about avian influenza. The lecture will also cover preventive vaccines and therapeutic research results pursued by the Tokyo Medical Research Institute.
